If i was Davey i would say they're all great! 'Rocks Off' is the only tryly great song there though for me, a clear winner. 'Whip' and 'Heartbreaker' would be next, borh fun and enjoyable rock tunes but nothing really special considering where the bar was set by the band. 'Fool' and 'Angie' are both ok, but don't excite me as much as they once did.

When the Whip Comes Down is generic late 70s Stones. Dull and uninspired. Some Girls rep as some kind of post peak "classic" is an odd one.
I love Angie despite Jagger's mewlings. In fact I think it's rather beautiful and moving.
Rocks Off is magnificent. Maybe the best thing on Exile along with Soul Survivor. One of those Stones songs that justifies all that "Greatest Rock n Roll Band in the world" hype for 4 minutes at least. Especially love the middle eight. Really great atmosphere too. Captures the thrill of some kind of perpetual twilight rock n roll world in all its sleazy, transgressive glory.
Fool To Cry is ridiculous and a bit of a mess.
I really like Heartbreaker. Love Charlie's drumming and the dirty clavinet. Lyrically it's a bit silly and at this point such stories seem faintly ridiculous given the Stones status but there's still some peak Stones magic in there. Like the punchy horn section too.

I went with Heartbreaker. I don't think it gets enough praise.

No votes for 'Angie' yet - thought that one would win! I think it's the Stones' best ballad.
Who voted for 'Fool To Cry'? 😮

Fuck it - "Fool to Cry" needs some love. I think I'd take falsetto Mick over just about anything most days. I love that they even tried a tune like this and managed not sounding like Dennis DeYoung's wet dream drowning in muskrat love.
"Daddy. What's wrong?"
How could I vote against it?
Best. Song. Ever.

Yeah, it's so clearly "Rocks Off" of this group - might be my favorite song on Exile.
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo the very distant runner-up. There are other songs on GHS and IOR&R that would be much closer, but still not close.

"Rocks Off" is by far my favorite thing here.
"Fool To Cry" might rank second. It didn't do anything for me back when it came out, but it's very gradually wormed its way into my heart... sort of. I don't need it, but it's nice to hear once in a while.
"Angie" is the opposite - loved it when I was a kid, but find it a tough listen now. Has Mick ever sounded more insincere? I mean, that's really saying something - but has he? I think he flat out ruined a decent (if overlong) piece of music. Nice strings, though.
"Doo Doo" always sounded to me like a really great intro that just keeps going for three and a half minutes without ever getting to the song. To be fair, one might reasonably say the same about Billy Preston's "Outa Space", a record I've always loved unreservedly. Oh well!
"When The Whip Comes Down" - pfft.
Honestly, has any other great band stopped mattering as abruptly as the Stones did after 1972?

Rocks Off is great fun. The others typify why I have little time for The Stones in the 70s.

Rocks Off is magnificent. Maybe the best thing on Exile along with Soul Survivor. A most shocking statement for yours truly. Always filed Soul Survivor under "nice filler". Rocks Off is great but suffers from that pause in the middle that breaks the groove. My faves in Exile are Tumbling Dice and Sweet Black Angel.
Incidentally I voted for Heartbreaker, just because it meant a lot to me at the time. Listening to this track I saw the light that I should stop listening to prog rock.

When the Whip Comes Down is generic late 70s Stones. Dull and uninspired. This. yeah, I get that but it looks like I voted for it. I can't believe I'd take it over "rocks off" and yet it would appear I did. this is where a smart guy would give reasons and excuses for such a thing. Me, I'm going to double down. the first week "some girls" was out a fellow Stones fan asked me how I liked it and I blew her a raspberry. this pretty much summed up my feelings at the time. By the end of that summer I had changed my tune quite a bit. there are songs I never warmed to but what I now call the "Stones on Viagra" tracks won me over pretty quick. Calling this and "Lies" and "Respectable" uninspired Stones by the numbers strikes me as scrupulously fair. I check off all the boxes on your form. I fundamentally agree. Here's where we part ways -- they Fuckin' RAWK. they fuckin' rawk in that way that only the stones rock. whatever it was the Stones felt like they had to prove - I felt like they proved it. Jann Wenner was right to mock Jagger for thinking he was a punk flying around on a private plane. Likewise, I think I'M right as a Stones fan to think the fruits of this deranged idea rock as only the Stones can.

When the Whip Comes Down seems like they're trying too hard to burnish the tawdry side of their reputation. Respectable is more fun, to me.
