Over the past week, we watched The Godfather and The Godfather Part II. Both stunning films of course, but I'm now wondering... should I bother watching Part III? A new edit has just been released, in the hopes of saving it, but critical reviews haven't been very good. Has anybody seen this new cut? Can anyone convince me to watch this one?

I'm yet to make it all the way through. I think my eyes got bronzed shut while watching it. I've always meant to give it another go. it feels like a shoe hasn't dropped yet until I do. I don't know why I feel that way. who wears three shoes?

Read a few reviews and they say the changes are few and subtle, but make a decent impact on the overall narrative..Sadly, they couldn't replace Sophia through digital chicanery or magically add Robert DuVall to the proceedings

it kinda feels like Coppola's equivalent of the Star Wars prequels. I have seen it. I can't remember it.
Pacino's hair is enough to turn me off it.

The new cut isn't that much different, the start has been changed with a scene from later in the picture. The end is shorter.

It's the first I've heard of a re-edit of III though, will have to check that out. The re-edit is technically entitled "The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone," and just came out last week.

I watched enough of it to know that I think Sofia Coppola gets too much blame. sure, she's not very good and maybe not being very good got her on her true path.
I always heard Winona Ryder was meant to do it but dropped out for one reason or another. As much as I like Winona Ryder I can't imagine she would have single-handedly made the film much better.

I actually think Sofia Coppola gives one of the better performances in the film.
I haven’t seen the new edit, but my biggest complaint about part 3 is that Coppola’s decision to present the whole thing as a kind of grand opera was just a bad conceit. It caused almost all of the actors to pitch their performances just a bit too high. Sofia Coppola actually gives a nice, naturalistic performance. I wish her co-stars had modulated to her, and her father taken some cues with his direction. But as it is - I guess she stands out badly for not having chewed the scenery like the rest of the pros who clearly gave FFC what he wanted.
But it’s a good film. Plenty of ideas running through it. Well worth the time.

After the fiasco he made of Apocalypse Now Redux, which managed to turn a masterpiece into a bloated mess, I'd have no faith in Coppola improving even the underwhelming Godfather III.

I’ve heard good things. Apparently the goal was to make Michael’s missed shit at redemption feel more visceral. What I heard was that this version really lets you feel like he’s got a shot before it all goes bad. Maybe that’s hype. But it seems like a good mission-statement for the project.

Presumably (I haven't seen it)

Has anyone had a big of a dive as Coppola has had? At least Scorsese manages to keep his films entertaining.

Yeah, it's pretty dramatic. Four stone classics in the 70s, then just a dribble of third-rate stuff for 30 years or so.
