the yo la tengo track is a dirge, doesn't really go anywhere.
the al jones track is a revelation! never heard of him before. this is the reason why i love the cup. a new discovery and now i'm going to investigate further.
a lovely, slight piece of whimsical wyrd folk.

Yo La Tengo doing what they do. Not my thing for more than a few seconds at a time. Keep waiting for the thing that captures the good moments all the way through, but haven't heard it yet.
B is the other side of that - doesn't meander at all, but comes off a bit slight. And it sounds more like a Jethro Tull imitation than any great wyrd-folk discovery to me. But it does waste less of my time (plus I like early Tull).

Dayodead going obvious in round 1? I quite like the bite behind the buzz of the guitar, and the whole thing has a warm summery glow to it, as if the world wasn't actually collapsing in a heap of shit in Winter. Almost has a post-rock feel to its propulsive reach for a climax that never comes. Definitely the best track of the cup so far! Of the three I've heard.
B seems a bit more pop influenced than any lost folk classic to me, there's hints of Beatles in the melody and annoying phrasing/lyrics. That flute is an absolute fucker too, I'm glad the track is a short one, that was setting my teeth on edge.

Agree with Hatz. Pretty typical Yo La Tengo. I liked it better than that floaty other thing.
I'd like to see Skope and Hatz dance to that together in a field of clover, but sadly I don't think I will get that wish.

I always say I've yet to hear anything by Yo La Tengo that moves me in any way. That hasn't changed. They're a band with impeccable influences, and there are some nice sounds peeping through there, but it's pretty boring really - college boys and girls with lots of money to spend on fancy instruments but without much in the way of personality.
I'd never heard of the other fella and so I looked him up. Didn't learn much other than the album came out in 1969 and has a bit of a following. That kind of thing. It's OK, charming even, but again I'm puzzled by the choice when there are 18 trillion billion zillion other tracks that could have been chosen. I think it's going to be THAT kind of competition (again)...

The Yo La Tengo wasn't unpleasant, the guitar and drums mesh together well. However it's all a little bloodless for me and rather lacking in emotional expression.
B is also quite restrained and well mannered. He comes across as the kind of guy who always returns his library books on time. But it was pretty and I enjoy this kind of English pastoralism. I'd be interested in what the album has to offer.

I have to echo G’s sentiments here. A is a bit ‘New Order-lite’, and fairly pointless.
B is too close to folk for me. I don’t mind the flute, but it is all a bit Arran.
I’d abstain, but I’ll be brave and vote for

The battle of the OK tunes here for me - nice enough without being really singular. Jeez B slips off real quick at the end, did he suddenly realise he was gonna be late to orchestra practice? I think A is the one i enjoyed a bit more though.

A is Yo La Tengo by the numbers, featuring their mix of noise, melody and subtlety that I always fall for. Not sure I need more records from them (just got one) but everytime I hear them I get caught.
B is one of those folk numbers of which I've heard mroe than enough for a couple of lifetimes in these cups. At least it was short.

I didn't mind A. Pleasant enough but bloodless.
B was ok too but very slight.

I had to listen to both tunes twice they were that inconsequential, and I still couldn't hum either one of them if forced.
Yo La Tengo makes a nice enough noise, and if I was twenty years younger I'd probably be playing something similar down in the basement with my friends.
I don't want to join Al Jones' orchestra because he'd probably make me play a toy piano or some shit like that.
