the burke track, musically, is a bit annoying. it doesn't match his vocal performance.
not heard of fredo viola. it held my attention without thrilling me. i detect a beach boys influence.
i'm going to give this to B because as much as i like burke, the pick is ill-advised.

I like the Solomon Burke song because it's outside the standard soul format. I think it's a pretty playful little guitar riff and like the call and response. It's not as earnest as some of Burke's songs and plays against it.

That is a strange musical arrangement for Solomon Burke, there's something almost baroque about it, it feels like a novelty song or something. Good vocal performance, but it feels like there was a mix-up in booking the session musicians. You never know, perhaps Steeleye Span have a hidden soul belter on a b-side somewhere.
I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You recorded something that sounded exactly like it was from 1971, and added some pointless electronic burbling. Another bordering on ELO and prog, and I do not approve.

I detect a Nilsson influence with B, which I like. Good thing to be influenced by. Doesn't do much particularly new with it, but...worth watching for proverbial future developments, etc.
A is a bit odd and, while I agree the arrangement and the vocal are a bit of a mismatch, it's in a way that I find interesting. Backing vocals almost sound like they were recorded at a hootenanny. Mismatches can be fun, and he's a great singer, so I'm going to embrace the oddness on this one.

I'm struggling with both here, not that either are unpleasant. As others have commented, the musical backing in A doesn't really work, it needed a much fuller arrangement to bring the song to life. B has that quality, that contemporary music can have sometimes, of almost trying too hard, of throwing too many things in there. It's like the track can't settle on a consistent melody or sound, that its searching restlessly for something to work. I was reminded quite a lot of Rufus Wainwright.
I don't know..for the strength of the vocal A

I enjoyed both picks quite a lot, best match so far. Loved the unusual arrangement of Burke's track, though I found the backing vocals slightly annoying, but as a whole it was very good.
Fredo Viola is worth exploring, I've heard a couple of records from him and it is always inventive and pleasant. I love the vocals here (one of his strong points always), and the lush arrangment and how it varies along the song. And it needs more votes.

The Burke tune put me in mind of this little belter, and for that it automatically gets my vote. The other guy is annoying, and would probably be a real twat if you were sat next to him at a bar, droning on about "pocket symphonies" and how he mics drums.

I like 'em both but I'm gonna go B. it's got a good beat and I can balance my checkbook to it.

This may be the toughest vote for me so far. I wasn't familiar with Freda Viola before this, but this track is pretty nice. I like the weird, whimsical noisy touches here and there, and the clear Harry Nilsson vibe. At the same time, I love Solomon Burke, and that odd backing track is really growing on me.
I'll go with B.

B sounds like Billy Joel our something. It's unpleasant. A sounds like standard bcb cup fayre.
I wish I could abstain, but I'll go with

An interesting match, 2 tracks i like ok without being completely sold on either. Burke's voice is always a pleasure, but this track itself is not a fave. B i find intriguing while it's on, but once it's done i find it left barely a trace and is gone on the breeze. Hmmm... maybe b for digging a little deeper.

Burke
Never been that arsed about Burke, too much Gospel. The toytown backing doesn’t help.
Viola
Another on the ok-ish spectrum.
