the newman track does nothing for me. horrible 80s production too.
A is alright, but hardly an original pick.

I liked B, but it can't compete, sadly. Bad match up. Against another song, I might have picked B.

Well, no prizes for guessing how I'll vote in this one. TBIGM was the first single with Darlene's lead vocals released on Philles under her own name, following two as the Crystals and two as Bob B Soxx. The slow tempo and woozy feel of the backing track was closer to Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah than the Crystals' material, although the song is fairly typical girl group fare, albeit with a gorgeous soulful lead. Until we get to the middle eight, with that lovely solo by Teenage Steve Douglas and the off-beat handclaps. Such a beautiful tone. Nice outro, too. Overall, it's a lesser Spector, but still a small marvel 7.5/10
Decent bit of post-punk poppiness, and if I had been born in 1963 rather than 1948, I might well have been enthusing about this rather than Darlene. As sloop said, an unlucky match-up, although I suspect when all the votes are tallied this might win it. 5.5 /10

A features a terribly cliched chord sequence, and the song really isn't much to dress up about at all. The vocal is fabulous, of course, and Ray's right to single out the middle eight, which knocks it up a category.
I sort of like B but it's that lemon-sucking-face fucko from Wire, isn't it? and I hate that band

A has the expected big, impactful Spector production which obviously lends it an appeal straightaway. Can't say I care that much about the song though, it feels a bit like "period kitsch" in a way that the best Spector from this time never does. I've been struggling to know what to say about B. It feels quite grey and unmemorable, it's all quite hectic but to what end?

Ah, canon-adjacent vs. post-punk - the eternal battle. Is this what this whole round's gonna be like?
Newman does that treblejangle thing well, which makes sense as Wire was one of its inventors. But (stop me if you've heard this one) not much of a song there, is there?
A is of course wonderful, and of course a cynical pick. Something better against it might have gotten a protest vote, but B doesn't exactly go anywhere unexpected either, so...

A is fine, but doesn't deserve such a lopsided victory. B needs a little love.

I can't take the name Darlene Love seriously, makes me think of Pauline in The League of Gentlemen, isn't that right Mickey, love? This is the kind of generic 60s slop which hoovers up the votes in these cups, just because the video isn't just a still of the record doesn't mean it isn't the usual tweed jacket with leather elbow patches. Shite.
Colin Newman's debut solo album is probably as good as anything Wire recorded, preferable to Pink Flag in my view, and this is as great a slice of pop-post-punk-pop-post-pop-punk as you're ever likely to hear. A lovely sharp angular thing, does what it needs to, and fucks off.
B obviously.

Oof, this may be a slaughter. A is great, while B is just ok for me. Sometimes ok is enough to swing my vote, but right now it's not. Love's vocals are wonderful.

As Ray said A is lesser Spector but still a wonderful track, albeit hardly a brave pick. I would discount several points because of that, but not enough to get beaten by the ok-but-bound-to-be-immediately-forgotten B.

With a bit of work, B could sound like something by the New Pornographers or someone similar, and has the same sort of catchy melodic nothingness that so many aspire to these days. It is immediately forgettable, whereas something like A stays rattling around my brain for quite a while.
It doesn't really need any more votes, but...

As a pick for the Cup, A is a boring and "safe" pick. And B grew on me.... but there's no way I can actually pick it over the Darlene Love track.

Love has a great voice, but this song just bores me to tears..At least the Newman track is something different..Peppy and poppy post punk (Not better than Pink Flag, mind you), does enough to take this..May even check out the rest of that album..Vote B
