I liked A, but it can't compete against the Gang that is Starr.

Couldn't find out much about this band - you try Googling Christmas-Girl Police and see what happens - but trusty discogs tells me they were fromn Boston in the late 1980s, when the US started producing good bands again, and they featured James McNew, later the trusty third wheel on Ira and Georgia's wagon: I'm not sure he's on this one, but there are a few things on it reminiscent of YLT. I like the female vocals and guitar, and the fact that it doesn't overstay its welcome. 5/10
While I never heard of A, of course I've heard of Gang Starr, but never knowingly listened to them. I have no metric to judge this by, any more than I have for jazz or Reggae, so I'm not marking it, but I prefered
A

James McNew doesn't play on the first one..I like the track, but would have chosen something else from the album.Perhaps one of the first three more upbeat songs (Big Plans, Loved Ones, Boy's Town Worksong) would have done better..The album itself is a good slice of underground indie rock
The second is a safe hip hop pick, from a landmark, golden age album...
Think I will reward going slightly outside the box (Even though it will get killed in this match up)..Vote A

A
and can I be excused from making a comment this time? I can't be arsed. A isn't great but B is like getting beaten up in a nightclub

Preludin has the same blind spot for hip-hop as BCB did. WBWGs still the rule even when utterly typical. At least there's some estrogen balance on this one, but it doesn't save it from the post-punk doldrums.
B is inventive, powerful, and catchy. And not too canon, not that this place would recognize this particular canon if it busted a cap in our collective ass.

A's an interesting left-field pick, someone who's clearly seen Dayodead's startling performances in previous cups and thought "this is a sure-fire track to success!" I do like the tone to the guitar, too, which I did on the much-maligned YLT track, too, though the female vocals are a bit annoying. Then again, she kinda reminds me of a yank version of whasserface from The Fates, and I loved that album. So, bonus points for obscurity apply.
I don't think B is as obvious a choice as the right-honourable Dayo suggests, it's a step removed from Tribe or De La Soul, which is more what I'd expect to be the safer picks here. And to be honest, I'm a sucker for this kind of relaxed and jazzy hip-hop, especially if it has a high-piched squeal throughout. I'l listen to anything with an annoying high-pitched squeaky tone, I reckon. Makes a mockery of the competition though, if that's all you've got to do.
Really good tie, but B wins it for me.

The vocal of A reminds me of Alison Statton and I like that about it, but that's about it I'm afraid. I was looking for something to grab, but it just seemed so aimless and tuneless.
There is something refreshing about Bs appearance. Gang Starr did more sonically interesting tracks, but the rap pulled me in and its from a period of hip hop I have a lot of time for.
Fairly easily...B

Not sure what to make of A. There are some interesting noises here and there but it could have benefit if it had featured poeple who could actually sing.
I was ready to discard B as I usually do with all things hiphop, but it turned out that I liked it!. Does it mean that I'm finally getting it, almost 50 years later? Not that I plan to buy any record, mind.

A was quite enjoyable in its way, thanks for the heads-up on the band, picker. Musically a kind of indie mish mash but with enough spark to warrant further investigation.
B is not a personal GS fave, but it's still great and gets my vote here. Guru is one of the greatest MCs ever, Premier was one of the greatest DJs ever, and together they made hip hop for the ages.

Try Gang Starr's Step in the Arena, or Guru's Jazzmatazz Vol.1 - both brilliant records, and ones i really think you will enjoy if you liked the above track.

I lived in Boston, which is where the band was from when A was new, they played them on the radio and I never liked them.
I've always liked Gang Star --one of the few hip hop acts that were able to have a long career without starting to suck

Can't say much about A other than maybe the guy should have kept quiet and let the girl do all the singing (not that she's that great either, mind). It's a pretty unremarkable indie rock tune.
Not much to say about B either except that it's a fucking classic.
