i'm a sucker for the bass guitar sound on A. they seem to be going for a melody nelson vibe. the only problem is that there's not much to get hold of and the two vocalists are a bit lame. it ends up sounding a bit too contrived and outstays its welcome.
B is pleasant enough and has a nice latin easy-listening groove to it. ultimately, it's a more of a song.

The Jonathan Bree song doesn't really have much going on, does it? But it sure tries hard to be cool. I had tried listening to this one before. I stuck with it a little longer this time, I think.
No idea what Tom Zé is singing about but this has a real nice groove to it and his vocals are just right.

A can piss off. Piss off, A
I like a lot of that Tropicalia stuff mainly because I think Portuguese sounds beautiful when sung, and the instrumentation is usually sweet. This sort of shuffles along pleasantly but it builds and when the backing vocals burst through, it becomes almost special 🙂

B by the length of two Niles. It kind of has an odd mix - those acoustics up top are a bit jarring - but he's a charming eccentric. Tropicalia's Beefheart, or at least Malcolm Mooney.
A, by comparison, is nudging us in the ribs going, "Eh? Eh? Pretty clever, huh?"

FFS, did Jonathan Bree run somebody's dog over or put sugar in a gas tank ? Geez..A nice little Stereolab inflected bass jaunt is better than whatever easy listening goal the second track is going for..Vote A

Neither are really lighting my candle. There's an essence of something interesting going on in A, but it sounds like they need to practice more and add more personality and colour to their playing. The "vocalists" are a waste of time. I was hoping for more from the Tom Ze track, being a big fan of this era of Brazilian music. It never really got going for me, a bit of a dull song, but not dislikeable. I'm trying not to abstain..so B

A has a nice groove, but doesn't really do anything with it. There *is* a weird menace to the sound of it, which really adds a disturbing (but interesting) element to the lyrics. Good pick.
But B... now that's a tune I could build a day around. Zé is just such an oddball, and there's juuuuuust enough weird little touches here and there in the song to take what could just be a pleasant sounding tune and elevating it to something entirely it's own. The video, though, could have been better - staring at one of the most fucked up album covers for several minutes isn't exactly my cup of tea.

I quite liked A. I know it’s a slightly cynical appeal to the hipsters.
I like B as well. I’ve got loads of bossa nova stuff and things like Manu Chao, and it’s all groovy.

if the first one featured a woman stage whispering in French then it would have been a shoe in. it didn't.

a suffers from that modern pop thing of being too self-conscious and arch. all detached and unemotional.
I enjoyed B. Niceb

I pretty much agree with all the A naysayers, but I don't hate it - It's just hollow, empty calories music.

I think I like A better than most, but not as much as B. A great pick!

Great description.
B is fine with some weird touches here and there and quite pleasant to listen to. Not mindblowing but good enough to easily win here.

A is ok. Bree certainly didn't run over my dog so i don't hate it or anything, it's just not overly special. B is a nice noise, that mix of the strange yet laid back is intriguing. Is that a bouzouki?
