The Moles track works a bit better than the Cardinal song from earlier and is mildly interesting..I appreciate the SOK track more when the vocals kick in half way through and the pace picks up..Going with the Afro-Jazz..Vote A

Holy crap, that Sons of Kemet track, what an absolute revelation! They're new to me, and that just blew me away. With the tuba/percussion set-up, it very much made me think of New Orleans brass bands, but there was a crazy free/modal element to it, which really worked. And then the vocals came in, and just brought it to another level. Absolutely incredible track, my favorite new discovery of the cup so far.
The Moles track - uh, it was pleasant enough? But now can I just relisten to the Sons of Kemet?

"My Queen is Ada Eastman" could possibly have been my favorite pick thus far but the vocals ruined it. The less said about The Moles the better. Someone's just trying to fuck with us, right?
Glad I kicked my money smokin' addiction.

Give B credit here - hard to overstay your welcome when you stick around for that short of a time. It's...cute, I guess, but it feels a bit too much like a sketch. There's not really any song there to speak of, is there?
A is pleasant enough, but doesn't really add anything new to what they're taking off from, so I don't know that I would ever turn to it by choice (cue G accusing me of making an 'authenticity' argument again), but it's pleasant enough in the moment. They'd probably be decent fun live, unlike B which sounds comparatively stuffy.

B makes me feel like I'm trapped inside some black and white movie on late night tv. my straight legged jeans are very uncomfortable. I can't loosen my belt because I can't see through my horn rimmed glasses. I don't think they had enough money to finish the movie properly so I walk off in the early morning street wet with rain. I think I lost my job. I'm reminded that Kennedy's president so a glimmer of hope in my glum, black & white movie life.

Really liked A musically and was hoping the soloing would get wilder and more expressive.Instead a political rap came in and the instrumentation took a backseat, which was a little disappointing. I don't really know what to say about B, it felt like it was speaking a language I didn't understand.

Holy Shit, is there a way to vote against both? B managed to make two minutes feel like 4. A managed to make 6 minutes feel like a week. I was tempted to vote for the shorter piece of crap, just because of that, but it doesn't deserve it. For the first time in ages, I
abstain.

I've been getting into Sons of Kemet lately, and they're a lot of fun to listen to, but I find the Moles tune to be a bit more interesting musically. It's an odd little thing...

Shabaka Hutchings is pretty much the key player in British jazz right now, and this entire album is a joyous celebration of black womanhood while referencing the David Icke/Jimbo conspiracy about the royals being literal reptiles. Although it's entirely written by Shabaka, the tuba is what makes the album for me, an undersung instrument that just adds to the sense of fun here while performing bass duties. Also, it remains a truism that having two drummers is better than one. The Wire gave this the album of the year for 2018, and they weren't wrong.
I see these lot have the same vocalist as Cardinal from the previous round. You have to wonder how he managed to get a job twce, really. Reminds me of Damon Albarn singing for Pavement or something. That's not a good thing.
