Do you listen once, go with your gut?
Give it a day or two to sink in?
Just depends?
I listen once and go with my gut.

Do you listen once, go with your gut? Give it a day or two to sink in? Just depends? I listen once and go with my gut. It depends on how much i like both tracks, and if i have enough time and remember to come back. If it is an awesome match with 2 tracks i find hard to separate, i might listen several times

I usually listen to each track once and vote my gut, but may go back and listen again. When there are two tracks I like, and one isn't clearly head and shoulders above the other, I'll vote for the one that is newer to me or a bolder choice - a track by a canon artist has to really stand far above the other track for me to go with it. Voting for something like the Beatles or Rolling Stones or Kinks or whatever is like, I dunno, voting for IBM. Sure, it's great, but what's the point of picking something everone agrees on?

I normally listen to each track and write my thoughts as I'm listening. If it's an interesting pick, I might listen a few times, or revisit sections as I'm writing. If a track is canon, or heavily leaning to the site's safe old conservative middle ground, it's really unlikely to get my vote.

Thanks for the straight dope. Could have told me your process while givin', it. was on my way to bed. I read what's been written already, and, like DF, free associate while I listen. I don't have a single process.

I never ever read what's been written already! That's a strict rule for myself.
I listen to as much of each as I can stand. I might not give the choices a full listen but they get all my attention - I really focus. I might write a few words as I listen, then edit/flesh out later.

I never ever read what's been written already! That's a strict rule for myself. I like that. What about music videos? Do you feel the song should be able to stand on its own?

Well...the song is what we're voting for, but of course the video can influence your choice. Usually negatively (the vast majority of vids are shit)

One of the things that i noticed as i was selecting Steph's list was that she often seemed to pick live clips or bad quality sound clips for her songs that kinda detracted or at least distracted your attention from what was often a good/decent song. God bless her; in my head i was going "No, we are NOT using that clip, Steph"

I normally listen once and vote how I feel at this first listen. If it's two tracks I enjoy similarly I listen twice. Sometimes a track that is a real fine new discovery I may listen twice and decide if it deserves further exploring.
About videos, I just don't watch them.

Like JC and Osgood, I don't watch the videos because I'm focusing on what I'm writing in the quick reply box at the bottom of the page
