I keep a spreadsheet where I can keep track of the ties.
Through a process of elimination (previous and current votes) I try and predict who the offerings are from and, depending on their threat to my parade to the crown, I vote against what I think their choice is to ensure they lose the tie.

Michael Jordan didn't become the best based on his talent alone. It was the hard work, effort & determination, - constantly trying to improve his game, countless hours of practice. That's what makes the heart of a champion, and I can tell, you sir have one. Best of luck!

I vote for the song.
For long songs, I'll give them a listen up front, skip to the middle to see if they've gone somewhere and maybe listen again if I feel they deserve that chance. I don't listen to every song all the way through if they don't capture my interest. You can kinda get the point of where a song is going from the intro. I know some people probably don't appreciate my intolerance, and I definitely have my likes and dislikes.
I find competitions like this interesting. I've tried explaining cups do non music geeks and you can see their incomprehension in their faces or how they reply.
I also find it fascinating in the songs people pick to represent themselves and what they think will win against other players' songs. And the responses to songs. I use to only vote A or B, but Geraint has sufficiently shamed me where I do try to write a short response on my picks.
And like Nolamike wrote, I do judge on obvious plays to the crowd. You have to be a little devious in doing this but some picks are unabashed pleas for votes. I usually don't buy those although I'm sure I've been guilty of it.
I don't think about picking songs too long. I build a list of 20 or 25 songs and whittle down from there. For this cup, I actually put Bootylicious as a possible, but after listening to my playlist a couple times, decided it wouldn't fit for this crowd.
