Two superb new selections to me. This round is certainly starting out promising.
The Ahmed Malik number has too much airy string action, while "Uhuru" is a little heavy on the vibes. But that bass!

Liked both, [ignorant rock fan]but Ramsey Lewis' lot seemed to stumble and fuck about at times, the rhythm was broken, not sure what that was all about[/ignorant rock fan]
A
was a DELITE

The best of the round. I wish I didn't have to pick one against the other. I feel the opposite of JC about the Lewis song.

Don't feel anything from the well mannered first track..Enjoyed the bass and off-kilter feel of the second..Vote B

As others have said, I like both of these. But B has more staying power. It's slight, and short, but it's from an era and label that I really like. Just a nice little groove that does its thing then checks out. Refreshing.

I can't believe JC has criticised a Charles Weetabix production!
I like both tracks without feeling either are real stand outs.
I did really like the snap and crackle of the bass and drumming of A. If I were being picky I did think the strings were a bit 60s/70s muzak, but I have a high tolerance for that kind of thing. B has got a lovely easy groove, but there's something a little intrusive about the vibes that doesn't quite work for me and there are stronger tracks on the album.
Close, but..A

Wow! Lovely match, very difficult to pick one. A's combination of the melodic strings with that bass sound all along clicked all the right buttons. But B bass sound and groove were also very much up my street, and I have no complains about the vibes. Funny that both tracks finish rather abruptly, but this is the only complain I can make on them.
A is losing right now and this is a definite push for my vote. Well done, guys. A

B Nah, no way that's vibes in B, too much of a plucked percussive sound rather than the smoother vibe sound. I will check... ah, it's called a Kalimba, and Maurice White played it. Fab, love it. What a great fucking match! We got N African orchestrated pop funk and Chi Town jazzy club funk - pickers you both deserve a win. I will come back.

Well, it's good to hear a bit more variety again. I was hoping from the image that A was going to be more of a down and dirty Ethiopiques kinda thing. It's another that's all a bit polite, feels like a soundtrack kinda thing, not far removed from elevator music. I want to be more positive about it, but the strings are very US-melodrama bland, and there's not enough else going on with the rhthym section.
B's in the same domain, easy listening library music, but does things the other way around, the rhythm section are much more up fron in the mix, and doing something altogether more interesting than the kalimba melody which is tucked under someone's shirt. I knew it was a kalimba all along, btw, you can tell it apart from the njani mbira by the sustain on the harmolodic fifths.

there's not much substance to A and it's a bit overdone. i'm not keen on the percussion either.
B is one of the best picks of the cup so far and new to me. i love it when the jazzers went funk in 69.
