An obvious John Prine pick vs. Norma Tanega, whom I've never heard.
As much as I appreciate the selection of Ms. Tanega, this particular song can't compete.

John Prine's fine, just not my kinda thing.
But - wow - that's a really sweet song by Norma Tanega! loved it, loved it. She looks so sweet! I'm going to search out more. Nice pick.

A sounds like songwriting 101. And I was hoping the vocal would be more interesting.
I'm not keen on choosing classic songs, but B wins here. It got lucky in its draw.

Tough call here too, but this time because both are really good. I like Tanega a lot, and I'm glad this isn't the obvious one, but it's also not as good.
Opposite issue with B - it's possibly the most obvious Prine song, but it also might be his best. I'm voting for it because it's pretty hard to call it predictable or canon considering how little we've talked about him. In fact I would imagine between here and BCB he's got fewer mentions than Tanega.
Another 'reserve the right to change my mind' blah blah blah.

A isn't a great song, but the performance carries a lot of charm and the 'New York' style girl pop production really elevates it. I enjoyed this one and it's nice to hear a track by her that isn't "Walking....". The John Prine track is fine, but doesn't really move me or interest me much. It's very much in that Woody Guthrie tradition, and I guess that's either your type of thing or it isn't.

Notice how Norma's face cracks into this huge smile just as the backing vocals kick in? Such a love

I'm really not familiar with John Prine at all apart from a few songs. I remember hearing about him dying last year. Hadn't taken much notice of him. But I knew this song.

I'm sure there are more than a few, but much of his work seems distinctly catered to America & Americans to me, though he does touch upon universal themes.

"Everyone is diggin' in a parallel line People always live and die in 4-4 time All I want is to take my time"
That lyric takes it..Tanega is a really interest artist..I checked out her first album awhile back and will probably go back to it to reevaluate..Like the choice of the non hit single, as well...Prine is good at what he does, but I wouldn't return too often to him..

Prine is a cardboard box

cardboard boxes are handy. you can fit a lot of stuff inside a cardboard box and JP certainly does. However, Prine's recent passing resulted in many listens to Sam Stone (among others)
A I haven't heard in a very long time. It sounds like an Old Friend and I'm getting a little lonely for old friends these days. I love her vocal - as honest and straightforward as John's and that's saying something.

I dig Tanega, but there's no way I can vote for it against the Prine track, which is sooooo much better. It's just so damn evocative and moving, with lines that haunt me every time ("there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" gives me chills each time, no matter how much I've heard it). It's an obvious pick for Prine, but then I think... when the heck does this board ever discuss Prine?

i'm not a fan of prine.
i'm surprised the poster who picked A didn't go for tanega's 'walking my cat named dog', which this pick is similar to but not as good.
