I haven't watched any of them. Aside from all the hype, as films, are they any good?

Utter shite. Like star wars , little variation and the same empty feeling after viewing. ITV would not have any movies if it wasn't for Potter, rings and star wars. Oh and Bond of course.

I'm not really a wizard, magic and dragons type guy, i prefer the Matrix to LOTRs, so i was never interested in potter and his young thugs going around causing trouble.

My wife prefers the Harry Potter films to the books, if that means anything.

Shit for kids. Its popularity with adults is sign of an infantile culture.

I've seen them, in a half-watch at Christmas kind of way. I don't get much sense of 'magic' from them, they're too dependent on CGI for that.

You had that period where you had this explosion of CGI but a lot of it doesn't look great these days and it jars in a way that practical effects don't.

I think deep down, we're subconsciously sick bastards, and want to see stunt folk really do dangerous stuff rather than just safely in front of a CGI screen. Not good for their health obviously but i don't think certain stunts are as thrilling without real risk.

I'm watching them slowly with my boy has just smashed all the books during lockdown.
They look dated and one can't help but feel this self-congratulatory aura about them. "Oh look it's Alan Rickman" , "oh look it's Kenneth Branagh" etc.
As an adult the story aesthetics seem really pasted together. Olde English charm, wizards, school, goblins, wands. It is very difficult to spot any originality at all. But, hell, kids LOVED it and at least it's now power rangers or fucking Michael Bay eh.

well, I like 'em a lot. I like how they start out as Fun for the Whole Family Type movies and end up much darker as they go along. I think keeping the same actors instead of re-casting amplifies this unusual quality for a very unique series of films. the actors age and the films get more complex as they go along. Now, I don't like them all equally but I'm a sucker for fantasy films and feel like this aspect of them really makes them stand out.

They're not great films, and they're not going to change the way you see the world or anything. But like Star Wars (all of which I've seen) or MCU (almost none of which I've seen), they do create their own little world over the course of the series. If you're in the mood to just mindlessly get lost inside of that world for a bit, well, you'll enjoy them.
I *did* enjoy the books when I first read them (along with my older daughter, so she could chat with me about them), and thought they were quite a bit better than the movies. But I'm re-reading them now with my younger daughter, and... they're a slog the second time around.
