Lynch played a blinder with The Straight Story. There is a few trademarks of his in the film but it is different to what he's known/famous for. It's sentimental and move at a pleasant pace. Lynch has a knack of find actors that aren't well known and they seem perfect for their role. Farnsworth is another example. Anyway nice detour from the Lynch norm.
Any other examples of directors going outside of their sweetspot?

Oh, of course... I'm a little more awake now. Bergman's comedy, 'Smiles of a Summer Night' is a good example.

That's my favorite disney film, so i was full of dread when i heard he was directing the remake. I can't bring myself to watch it.

That's my favorite disney film, so i was full of dread when i heard he was directing the remake. I can't bring myself to watch it. Its fine, there is a different start and end which bookend the film. I'm sure he was working within strict parameters. Disney wouldn't let anyone mess with the brand.
