I couldn’t entirely get with A but it never entirely lost my interest.
B’s OK. It’s all grind and no sparkle.

Well I listened to all of it. An insufficiency of treble for me. The little dashes of colour provided by the occasional horns steel drums and vibes only served to emphasize the grey bleakness of the bass/percussion noodlefest. Fairly extraordinary stuff for the late 1960s, sure, but not for me.
Well I remember this well, because I was intrigued by Mark Perry from the start, the first punk to graduate from fanzine to forming a band, with their their first single coming out before Pretty Vacant (so they weren't bandwagon jumpers, despite Fish's inspired rant). They were the first of the punk bands of the primitivist earnest persuasion to record, with lyrics up front (about bigotry, child abuse, sexual dysfunction among other things) and no attempt to hone their production and give it the Rock sheen applied to the Damned, Pistols, Spex and Clash (although their second single on Deptford Fun City, Life after Life, did have a dub version on the B-side). Unlike their fellow self-releasing learning-their-instruments-on-the-job contemporaries such as Swell Maps, ...And the Native Hipsters, O Level, The Television Personalities, etc, there were no concessions to pop, either. This was their fifth single (if you count the flexi of the wondrous Love Lies Limp, their best song imo, which was issued with a copy of Perry's ’zine Sniffing Glue), and acts as a kind of manifesto. It was also the last one I bought, because somehow we went on different paths after that.
Anyway, B

I think the vocal is a wee bit... ahem.. derivative. Of what or, indeed, whom, Snee? Asking for a friend
