Gauthier is a fine song writer / artist but I really liked the Akofa Akoussah song a lot more, despite the dirty/scratched vinyl.

A is the kind of 'country music' that the 2 daves would curl one out to.
B is pleasant enough without really capturing the imagination.

A draws you in with her wit and charm, but then the whole evening turns to soul crushing sadness and she won't let you leave until you've had to ask some serious questions about the choices you've made in your life. Who needs that when B has that great restrained groove?

I have never taken to Mary Gauthier although she's very highly praised in Americana circles. I've tried.

Mary Gauthier, eh? Never heard of her. Not something I would ever listen to for pleasure. I don't really get this kind of stuff. It's admirable I suppose that she's so 'soul bearing', and her voice is sweet (especially when she doesn't dip into the talky bits) but this was pretty hard work. Sorry.
Akofa Akoussah - this is much better. Maybe she's saying 'I drink' too! of course I don't understand anything. But it's melancholy, heavy, there's so much space there. I could have done with another minute or two. Sweet.

Hmm, can't say A is setting my world on fire, but it's passionate and I am a fan of a good redemption story. Plus it's getting killed here, which I don't quite understand as B isn't really up to anything any more interesting. They both sound like personal explorations on blues roots, but there's nothing truly striking happening musically in either case to my ears.

I like both but this is an easy A for me by virtue of the pedal steel and MG’s singing.

A is very sincere, but almost too sincere and the vocal is mixed so high it felt like being trapped with the story. You start to look round the room for a means of escape. Oh maaan..B seems like a real missed opportunity. That is one beautiful voice, heavenly and genuinely moving, but there's no real accompaniment, just a guitarist doodling away inconsequentially. It actually would have been better acapella.

Lovely piece of guitarage wrapping itself around A, until the slide comes in and performs its unnecessary tasteless tarnishing of the patina. That vocal is all a bit meh, I don't think the lyric is as dark as it wants to be, and I don't think she really gives it nay depth or emotion.
B seems much the grittier track, with a voice capable of expressing more emotion, but I'll refrain from commenting on the lyrics, if just to avoid showing off just how many languages I speak fluently (almost 1). The music behind isn't particularly interesting, but there's just an earthy, atmospheric quality to the production that makes it sound much more real than A's shiny plastic reproduction of misery.

Surprised so many unfamiliar with A, a highlight from a very fine album (although apparently not to the taste of many preludiners). I love everything from this track, the arrangement, the lyrics, the singing, the harmonies, and that magic final pause ca. 3:40 "but I don't ... give a damn".
B is nice, but A is great.

No wonder she drinks when she's making music like that. Christ
I liked B's smoky late night cafe vibe. Nice

I enjoy the odd bit of Americana now and again, but A's a bit soulless to me. I'm not sure what she could've done to make it more "real" other than take a bit of the shine off it, but even then...
B is woozily enjoyable and has more of real late night feel than A has managed.
