Syd DOES matter, it's true. But that song doesn't. I mean, nice Cale drone, attractively framed, but not much there to my ears.
B is slick and has had any sharp edges filed down, and Ferry is presumably a Tory Cunt now, but it's still impressive production and beats the hell out of the loud gated drums prevalent in the period. And whatever you may say about it being overdone, his voice still retains a lot of character.

Lesser Ferry sounds pretty damned good to me right now as I soak my feet and smoke my cigar.

Well, it's taken until the final round, but now I know - Syd Matters is responsible for the worst thing I've heard this cup. I'd rather hear one of those horrible shouty metal efforts again. Fuck me, what utter, utter misery. An insult to music.
Solo Ferry's mostly pretty bland but against A he sounds like Napalm Death

I actually have TWO albums by Syd Matters in my iTunes library. I think they were given to me by an erstwhile French BCBer, and I don't think I've ever given them more than a cursory listen, if that. Sadly, this tune encapsulates almost everything I despise about most modern music with its emotionally uplifting and swelling backing track attempting, but failing, to make up for the emptiness of the lyrics. I'm honestly surprised that the tune didn't crescendo into an all out chorus replete with massed backing vocal oohing and aaahing all over the place.
On the other hand, I've got a real soft spot for 80's Ferry, as it was later-era Roxy Music that I got into before discovering their early stuff much later. Sure it's polished to within an inch of its life, but it has a bit of soul to it, even if it is plastic.

Folktronica? That's a really lazy zwee sound, that has no real place in the song, adds absolutely nothing. Which is a shame as the song's quite pleasant otherwise, and the horn section reminds me of Sigur Ros circa Agaetis Byrjun. Which was probably their aim. I quite like this, I have to say, even though they don't really elevate themselves beyond their core influences much (which I'd say was more folk, baggy and post-rock than Floyd here).
I never really got the fuss about Roxy music, but solo Ferry is just an abomination. This is horrible plastic pointless shit that sounds like Chris Rea covering Sade, and whoever chose it should be embarassed. Fuck knows I am, just for having it in my youtube history now.

If ever proof was needed....doing this non-canon thing means we get 80s Ferry rather than 'Do The Strand', you know?
please never let this happen again

Everyone knows "Do the Strand", what's the point in picking it? You might as well go back to having list vs list, and have no-one bother to listen to the songs, and call it "The BCB Cup".

Never got much from 80s Ferry and SiriusXM plays this freakin' track every time I'm in the car (Switched quickly of course).. Going with the hazy slowcore folktronica of the first track..It's borrowed from 90s acts, who did it better, but gets the job done here....Vote A

I enjoyed A much more than everyone else it seems. I really enjoyed its slow build and fragility, there was something prettily tender about it. I like B although it's Ferry on autopilot (something you can say about his entire solo career actually). Enjoyable tie..

Fuck me, both of these are very brave choices, you know. A modern song with electronica meets acoustic, and Ferry in his 80s smouldering pomp. Good lord.
