against most anything else the Simple Minds would ace this by virtue of the singer's Restless Leg Syndrome. I predict they'll win this one handily without me so I'm going for B nothing special maybe but another one of those tracks I didn't know I missed hearing for YEARS until hearing it again.
I love when that happens.

If you had to choose a Simple Minds song, I guess this is the one to pick. B is an all-time favorite.

'Chelsea Girl' never did much for me, his vocal back then had the same creepy camp affected tone as Bono's, hard to swallow really. And anyway 'Life In A Day' is the truly great early SM song
The other one is a tiny bit better but not something I'd call the fire brigade out for HA HA!

Another tough one. B is overplayed on oldies radio, but it's been a while, and I've always loved it.
Not a Simple Minds fan, but A's piano and guitar hooks are undeniable.
Another to think about. Might depend how the vote's going.

the worst tie of the final imho. B is extremely bland and does nothing for me. i ended up liking A more than i thought i would, but that's the best thing i can say about it.
it's a shame the cup has ended on such a damp squib.

Saved the best match for last, great choices.
While the album itself is a mixed bag, CG and the title track in particular are top-fucking-notch, and a brave choice from you, A. Kudos. But B is one of those songs that you seem to forget about forever yet when you hear it again it sounds fanfuckingtastic and fresh as a daisy. It's that simple arrangement i reckon, no horns, just guitars, drums and those terrific vocals.

I'm tempted to say B, what with A being bloody awful.
But I wouldn't say that. So I'll just say B

Not a Simple Minds fan, really but that Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose track is a monster! Best song of all of these Cup entries, by far!

A doesn't seem to have a chance in hell. I reward its bravery.
(B is better, but again...oldies radio hasn't quite completely ruined it for me, so much as given A a bit more element of surprise that I like from these things.)

I tried to listen to A with an open mind. That intro is great. I was all set to turn against an old favorite. Then the singing...

I was always felt 'Chelsea Girl' was a bit incongruous as a product of UK post punk. The baroque keyboard was straight from 67/68, Charlie B's fluid guitar soloing was very mid 70s (he would change his style completely in under a year) and the whole thing had the sheen of a very Americanised power pop. They would reinvent themselves away from this soon enough, but there's something very appealing about the sheer directness of the tune, with hooks aplenty. There's an adolescent gaucheness about it sure ( even the Warhol/Nico allusions seem kind of obvious) but I can't deny its joie de vivre. B is pretty damn good. It seems to be far better known in the US than here judging by the comments. I really enjoyed its sharp punchiness, but it could have done with some horns to really hit home. Very little to choose between them, but it feels like Acould do with some love.

I have read some praise about SM on these boards, something I have difficulties in understanding. I have them filed under something to avoid at all cost. A is almost on the right side of things, to the point that I could have voted for it against other cup picks (Opeth maybe).
Surprised to learn that B is a classic rock radio staple in the US. Never heard it and it's fantabulous. As it's been said, the minimalist arrangement is ace and makes it a shining gem in a genre that has plenty of them.

Ooo, I've studiously avoided early Simple Minds, but I've not heard 'em doing anything as derivative as this before, they were at least doing their own thing in a shit way in the later material. Feels like it should've been released in 1975, and Jimmy's vocal is really annoying. Is this the most modern track picked in the final, from over 40 years ago? Such a shame.
No, sick of hearing this kind of thing now, it's just wallpaper to me.
