...in as much as we care.
Often around this time of year, I'll work on seeing as many of the nominees as possible. Recently saw Nomadland (loved it, probably will win best pic) and am in the middle of Sound of Metal (Riz Ahmed likely for best actor - it really is a pretty amazing performance), will probably watch Crip Camp (doc nominee, and again, likely winner imo) tomorrow.
I may not even watch the event, but I treat it like the Super Bowl - I try to tune in just for the big winners and pay attention to who's in it and who's likely to win, but not much beyond that.
Anyway - predictions, reviews, history, expectations?

It goes to show you how out of touch I am that I hadn't heard of most of these but I'll watch anything with McDormand in it because I think she is fabulous. Nice to see Riz Ahmed getting praise, I've liked him since Four Lions. Is Mank any good?
It seems a bit odd when nae cunt has been to the cinema for a year or so that we have Oscar nominations but I guess we have NETFLIX now (well I don't but whatever).

I have very little interest in it these days. I rarely see films when they're new these days anyway.

I've only been to the cinema twice in the last 18 months (for Little Women and the re-release of La Haine) and I don't think I've seen anything nominated for this year's awards.
I do want to see Nomadland and one or two others (actually probably the ones you mention in the OP, Dave) but I don't think they're thrill my socks off exactly. But you never know.
But anyway - the ceremony...I'm still kind of interested to see who wins, as I am every year, and of course to see the stars come out, and what they're wearing.

Too cynical for the oscars these days. Are all the films/actors nominated on merit or to meet quotas? I'll never watch all of them so i'll never make up own mind completely. Anyway, only interested in Mank because of fincher, nomadland because of McDormand and the father because its premise is intriguing and probably gives a slightly better feeling of what it's like to have dementia.

Mank is the kind of film that excites film snobs fans - auteurist director, old Hollywood subject matter, monochromatic b & w photography - but strip all of that away and you're left with a rather lifeless and plodding film that never becomes dramatically engaging.

The Oscars have always had that worthy element of picking certain kinds of movies and performances over others but you better believe the diversity tickbox approach will be getting cranked up from now onwards. It's so bogus but I guess people still like to look at the dresses. If they are anything like the Grammys viewing figures will be down as people turn off from this stuff.

The thing about picking a movie that isn't well known in the past is, i (anyway) always thought it was just Americans trying to show how cultured and up their own arses they were. Rather than ticking diversity boxes.

Parasite won Best Film last year and it's fucking shite Ah don't say that. I am looking forward to watching it. I went through spats of watching Asian films and they fell away from it. This has peaked my interest, just never got around to watching it even a year later.
