Ignore John, Markus. It's very good if not great.

And you like watching old women talking whilst eaten scones in a community centre in Doncaster. In winter.

Well, I've liked the films I've seen and I like the Oscar Broadcast since my family seems to enjoy the "horse race" aspect of it. it's fun saying "yay" and "boo" at the TV.
I think this "streaming movie problem" we've talked about in other threads is shaping up as a factor. I fully expect some real changes. I fully enjoyed "Mank" and "Ma Rainy..." but they are essentially "TV Movies" to my way of thinking. they are well done and worth singling out but something's gotta give.
so, what difference does it really make? none at all, I suppose but the thing about winning awards is that you need to follow rules. The rules seem due for an overhauling but I've been wrong about that sort of thing before.
I've got NO problem if "Nomadland" wins everything it's up for. there will certainly be a backlash if it does (there always is - eventually) I really like the "Harold Russell Factor" in this one. Good writing teachers talk about putting your real toads in imaginary gardens. well, these imaginary toads brought that real garden to life in what I found a very powerful way.

oh man, I loved it. I watched it with people who hated it - I get it. My mother in law loved the Dad character. she couldn't forgive him for what he did and the whole movie just crashed and burned for her in that moment. my wife just never warmed to anybody - a deal killer for her.
me, I was cackling like a chicken in the first five minutes. the family has lost their wi-fi signal and is working together to find another hot spot they can use. the "family dynamic" and much of the main character's personalities are FIRMLY established in these first few minutes of film.
it's tough but I thought it was dynamite movie making.

I've only been to the cinema twice in the last 18 months (for Little Women and the re-release of La Haine) and I don't think I've seen anything nominated for this year's awards. I do want to see Nomadland and one or two others (actually probably the ones you mention in the OP, Dave) but I don't think they're thrill my socks off exactly. But you never know. But anyway - the ceremony...I'm still kind of interested to see who wins, as I am every year, and of course to see the stars come out, and what they're wearing. This obsession with GOWNS !!

In winter. If only we could combine the two, then we'd have the perfect film. But only if it was French and subtitled.

You know that thing where some men get old and they physically start to resemble women? With John he's actually starting to act like one. Oooo, the lovely gowns...isn't Dua Lipa stunning in that dress? Beyonce....such a polite young woman. What a wonderful night it's been!

I imagine he treats himself to a bag of soft centred Werther's and a new ball of wool and settles down without a drink in case he has to go to the depressing toilet with the seat at a funny angle and misses THE outfit.
