I nearly watched "My Octopus Teacher". the trailer knocked my eyes out but I couldn't talk anybody into watching it with me. I see "...Chicago 7" got a few. I liked it but it feels pretty "Cable Movie" to me. maybe there's no difference anymore.
those "Judas.." actors might cancel each other out. I thought that was real well done. Sacha Baron Cohen might get it. He's a unique character and he does a decent job in the role.

You know that thing where some men get old and they physically start to resemble women? With John he's actually starting to act like one. Oooo, the lovely gowns...isn't Dua Lipa stunning in that dress? Beyonce....such a polite young woman. What a wonderful night it's been! I imagine he treats himself to a bag of soft centred Werther's and a new ball of wool and settles down without a drink in case he has to go to the depressing toilet with the seat at a funny angle and misses THE outfit. With his favourite cardigan on and a blanket over his knees. He'll either miss the outfit because of an unplanned toilet break or he'll nod off for a while after one too many Werthers before waking up to complain about that "awful Sharon Osbourne woman" ("I don't like her ONE BIT") Sync watch?

So far I've seen:
Mank - Meh. Overly stylized, but 'a fun romp,' as they used to say. I will actually be upset if it wins any major awards.
Nomadland - Great on every level. Should (and probably will) win best picture, and Chloe Zhao really should (and probably will) win for best director.
Sound of Metal - A bit ponderous in spots, but remarkably well-acted on all fronts and ultimately very thoughtful and thought-provoking. Riz Ahmed gets my vote for sure for actor, though I don't mind it going to Chadwick Boseman at all (as it likely will). Will win for sound for sure, and maybe for script.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom - Great but a bit stagy. Frances McDormand will win over Viola Davis (as she should, not to say Davis wasn't great). Boseman likely to win, and at least of the ones I've seen, he's my second choice.
One Night in Miami - Possibly my favorite of the bunch, but alas no best pic nom. Could even get shut out entirely, which would be a shame. Possible shot at script, but Paul Raci most likely takes supporting. I think this was absolutely marvelous, though - the entire cast was amazing.
Soul - Not quite as good as Coco, which is one of my favorite animated films ever, but I loved it, and I'd be incredibly surprised if this didn't win for animation. Wish I could see Woodwalkers somewhere; not gonna subscribe to Apple TV. Maybe it'll eventually be a cheap enough rental.
I most want to see Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Promising Young Woman, and the Chicago 7 one and the Father a little less so. Probably want to see Da 5 Bloods too, though I hear it's disturbing. And probably will see Crip Camp next (which will likely win for doc). I usually seem to find a way to watch all the shorts too so I hope this year won't be an exception.

BTW, the reason I thought One Night in Miami was so great was that it focused around very iconic characters, but the story brought them down to the human level and made it believable. A considerable achievement considering what preconceived notions we have about the four characters. I think it was robbed. Deserves a best picture nod at very least.

I don't get why "Borat: Subequent..." is in adapted screenplays. because it's a sequel?

Well, at least you got the token Diane Warren song and that Eurovision abomination, so you know the world hasn't shifted on its axis just yet.
I wish the lack of Disney and Bond songs meant the standards were higher, but not this year. "Fight for You" is pretty much the only one I like, which means it probably hasn't got a shot in hell of winning.
(I guess the one from One Night in Miami isn't bad, but the fact that I couldn't remember where it was in the movie means I find it far from essential.)

Saw Crip Camp last night and loved it. Lots of history that I didn't know, and the story of the protests feels like a pretty major part of recent American history that most people know nothing about. I certainly take sidewalk ramps and easier access to buildings for granted. Nice to be reminded that people fought hard for that, and that it happened pretty recently in the grand scheme of things.
Any suggestions for what I should watch next? Unfortunately, of the two I most want to see, Minari is renting for $20(!) and Judas and the Black Messiah is only showing in theaters and I'm not ready for indoor theaters yet, even vaxxed and masked.

really? we saw Judas... on Netflix or something. maybe it was a limited time deal or something. I thought it was worth seeing. it's told from the Fred Hampton point of view and I think that's a good way to tell that story. the acting was topnotch and the film making had a nice energy level to it.
I know it's not up for much but I think "Da 5 Bloods" was a dynamite movie.

I'd pay 6 or 8 maybe but it was pretty steep when I last checked.
