probably the album that shaped me most. not just the songs, but all the pointers on the inner-sleeve. just wonderful. going backwards into the future. evoking memories of school discos. punk/mod/two-tone/new romantics. barriers were being drawn. i was confused. dabbled, but then settled on the right side of the fence.

My first Jam album. The old saw, as I've heard it, is one of the reasons Americans liked the original British Invasion music was, even though it was identifiable rock and roll, the things the Kinks, the Beatles and even Herman and the Hermits were singing about were so originally British they fascinated Americans.
The Jam were almost too British for American tastes. I bet if you asked Americans what their biggest hit here - A Town Called Malice - was about, they would have no clue at all. The message or any subtle nuance would be lost on most of us.
We had BART in the Bay Area and of course there's the NYC subway and DC Metro, but a tube station at midnight is a whole different thing. You almost need a manual, like you need an urban dictionary for hip hop, for the Jam if you're not British.
But this string of three albums, starting with All Mod Cons, is one of the strongest in pop music. I'd almost put any group or artist against their consistent quality. I'd say they were the British Creedence, although coming from completely different places, using cultural touchstones throughout their music to make their lyrical points.

I wonder if they knew they’d made a classic when AMC came out? Something to do with the way the title track comes first even though it’s the shortest on the album, perhaps. And that “When my time comes” line. Anyway, it’s the album that made me like the Jam again after going off them around the time of News of the World – the third single in a row with “World” in its title – it felt like they’d run out of ideas. Which proved not to be true, obviously.
Yes to the inner sleeve. A style guide in the broadest sense. It made me switch to Rothmans!

I think I bought an SG more because of that inner sleeve than the Townshend era he was copying!
