I put it on last night while doing something else, because I know I'll watch it again at the weekend with the missus when she's back from Athens.
So I wasn't paying full attention, but there were things I thought were really good, the attention to detail is sometimes excellent. Alan sitting just that little bit too close to Jennie on the sofa was subtle and well done.
The joke about the guest's name "Fluck/Clunt" was inspired writing too.

The joke about the guest's name "Fluck/Clunt" was inspired writing too. No it wasn't, it was ripped off. My wife used a version of it one of her books, and it was already old then, told – possibly apocryphally – of a 'mayor of Swindon' who was asked to introduce Diana Dors (who had grown up there as Diana Fluck) in the 1960s. I didn't watch it because, like Coan, I always thought Pariridge was tiresome

Well, that's told ME.

I enjoyed it, but I feel that Partridge is old hat now. It’s a great character but the golden period was the first two series and he’s never bettered it.
The Trip is far better, although I know JC hates that too.

I enjoyed The Trip, actually. Especially the impressions.

I'm so utterly okay with him (certainly The Trip, absolutely all the early shows, even Hamlet 2), that he'd REALLY have to shit the bed something serious for me to dial back the decades of good will.

What is impressive is how utterly he lives that character. It's as if he can assume him totally unscripted and converse like that for aeons. Yes, he's been Partridge for over 2 decades, but Larry David for example I think is the same as the character he plays on TV. I doubt Coogan is.

The Trip is far better, although I know JC hates that too. I thought Alpha Papa was terrific. Lots of good stuff in the Mid Morning Matters and Sceptered Isle too. His hit rate is remarkably high. I genuinely think it's one of the greatest and most fully realised comic characters ever. I was a bit underwhelmed by the new show however but I suspect it will grown on repeated viewings. Took me a little while to adjust to the set up and I thought it was quite dense. Lots of dialogue, lots of lines. I feel he's at his best when he's off camera but I still laughed and winced throughout but I could do with more of the former. It'll be interesting to see how it develops.

A Facebook mate of mine and Dougie's, bloke called Bren who I've known for a while online, is a childhood friend of Coogan's. He doesn't mention it often, but I was taken aback a couple of Christmases ago when he posted a photo of the two of them and another old schoolfriend at the house of one of their sets of parents, alongside a very similar photo of them all in the same place from the early 80s. I tend to forget that Coogan's from just up the road here in Manc.
