they both followed a similar trajectory. brilliant first album, almost as good second album, decent third album. then mediocracy. i wouldn't mind spending some time singing the praises of this, which i think gets over-looked. Good call mate.

Jimothy, Jimothy, no Jimi processed jazz, blues, r&b/soul, rock and the avant garde/classical, worlds he also influenced and has credibility in. Velvets have the avant garde, rock, and Brill bldg pop. Thinking about it he influenced jam bands, fret wankery, hair metal, math rock and guitar messiah worship , satriani, vai ,ywingee unprenouncable and paved the way for van halen. Van Halen debut is pretty cool.

Velvets gave us many shambolic punk bands (Subway Sect, ATV, etc bands that strike a full barre chord with distortion, can't play, can't sing, can't harmonize) , lo-fi, Sebadoh, , Postcard bands, Sarah bands, etc., Van Halen was famous for his Hendrix denial. Much of the hairmetal, wankery worship was Zeppelin, Page based. Jimi Hendrix's House Burning Down Live by Turtle Island Quartet

Interesting how Hendrix can be interpreted in so many different ways... I think I remember a DnB producer citing him as an influence....

PKM: Jimi Hendrix came to check out one of your early shows with the Velvets later that month at the Whisky A Go Go in L.A., right before you started work on the group’s third album [simply called The Velvet Underground].
Doug Yule: I met him at the Whisky, and then later at the Record Plant [studio]. He used to go there at night and jam, and tape it. We were playing at the Whisky, and there was somebody out in the audience who was jumping up and down, banging a beer mug on the table, and making a lot of noise. And it turned out to be him. He came up afterwards and said he was really into it. I was sitting with Lou at a table and I was like…[jaw open] “is that you?” I was kind of in shock, because he just turned up. But he really liked that. And I can see why. I mean live, the group…I don’t think I’ve ever heard a recording that really gives you the feeling that the group put out live. It was a locomotive. It was a good beat, and extremely compelling.pleasekillme.com/doug-yule/

It could well have been him, maybe he was wired on something? Or maybe someone was pretending to be Jimi Hendrix and Yule then nicked the idea for when David Bowie came calling.

I agree, but apparently, the meeting made Lou start considering Jimi favorably.

There's another story about Hendrix seeing an early King Crimson gig in London, and basically getting agitated and saying to whoever was in the vicinity of his table "This is the best band in the world"—and he meant it. He want backstage afterwards just to shake Robert Fripp's hand. Seems Hendrix liked music A LOT! As to who I'd pick as the better artist, they're really REALLY about equal. About the same number of minutes of classic tracks, great for different reasons but not totally dissimilar, and—just to be a drag, sorry—both already passed their prime when they stopped.

Van Halen debut is pretty cool. it is. But who would you say had the more detrimental influence - Hendrix or the VU? At this point in time, both possibly dead ends, awaiting reconsideration. The upcoming doc may help the Velvets in a Bowie, Queen kinda way. Lou wasn't a nice person (and it is well documented ) and that means something to current kids. Plus Reed's stature outside US is much greater than within, where is mostly known by his Bowie connection and 1 hit (that is considered borderline transgressive). A left field possibility is Doug Yule being reconsidered and his Velvets' archive being opened which could have some good will value. Jimi, i don't know, he continues to sell well, and last year was the largest sales of guitars ever, maybe those two impulses meet. Black Gold still sits unissued, and may only be relevant to the fanbase even when it does come out. Much like the Velvets doc, it will take some kind of unearthing and repositioning possibly, but like the jazz giants: Miles, Coltrane, Monk, etc., his stature remains for those to find him. In world of Stevie Wonders, Bowies, and Princes being called geniuses, the big one could be, if Sly is reconsidered before his passing or because of his passing.
