I'm not just throwing these two bands together for a lark. It's just that recently it's become apparent to me that the Doors are very highly rated by most people here, perhaps more so even than the VU, who continue to get short shrift by some folk.
Please vote.

Both wrote great pop songs. The Velvets were probably more original, the Doors more entertaining. I'd probably go with the Doors, if only because Lou Reed once had the worst mullet of ALL TIME.

Velvets for me, though I think the Doors are oddly underrated in certain circles.
Lou vs. Jim as a poet - now that would be an interesting poll. Not sure how I'd vote on that one.

They're both fine bands, but the Velvets' highs are higher and the Doors' lows are lower. As for Jim vs Lou as 'poets'; both risible, although some occasoinally decent lyrics from both.

Doors arrived fully formed, and were ground zero for thee Viet Nam protest/rock and roll nexus, constant riots at shows through out the US averaging 70 shows a year across five years. Police, tear gas, arrests all to the strains of Break On Through, The End, Peace Frog, etc., The Doors were the band The Stones wanted to be, and once Morrison was gone Mick got to do his Karaoke "Prince of Darkness' impression unfettered.
(plus Lou really can't sing, Jim can)

.... the VU, who continue to get short shrift by some folk. They really don't. They're probably the nearest thing to a sacred cow ( along with Hendrix, which is why I pitted them together) that we have on here.

I think you're underrating Reed there. There really weren't many better lyricists that I can think of from that period.

I never gave/took/had a shit about The Doors. I like VU a lot, without considering them sacred ruminants of any kind.

Love both immensely. If i had to choose which means more to me personally, i would go with The Doors.

We say more about bands who did less, and credit far smaller events with greater weight (REM, Pistols, Clash, etc.,)

It's been premiered in Cannes (I think) so maybe some of the torrent sites will have mp4s in a week or two.

Context is important in understanding cultural history, but it doesn't, on the whole, make us like the music more. It may, with some acts, deepen our appreciation. Were The Doors any more countercultural than, say, The Jefferson Airplane? I don't know how you'd measure something like that.

The Airplane became too strident as they became too political. Morrison knew to allow space in the songs, the albums, and live performance. He sensed very well with the tensions of the 'generational gap' the personal was political: black, white, native, man, woman, being young, "love it, or leave it" the draft, Viet Nam, drugs, etc., The listener connected and filled in the rest.
