Context is important in understanding cultural history, but it doesn't, on the whole, make us like the music more. It may, with some acts, deepen our appreciation. Were The Doors any more countercultural than, say, The Jefferson Airplane? I don't know how you'd measure something like that. Much less. Not as good, either.

Love both immensely. If i had to choose which means more to me personally, i would go with The Doors. I'm not sure I would. in fact I won't choose between them. fuck King Solomon.
great thread, though! I love the Airplane but, politically, I think those guys were posers. they talked a good fight but they were slaves to coke ecomomics before anybody & driving around in Ferraris, you know? I like their music - that's the main thing.
both bands (Doors & VU) hit a dark nerve. I wouldn't blame somebody for giving this to the Doors for hitting it in a more noticeable way to more people but VU might give 'em a run for their money long distance wise.
neither outfit even pretended that the summer of love had fuck all to do with them.
it's a Draw!

Velvets for me, though I think the Doors are oddly underrated in certain circles. Yes, exactly.
