JJF, just a tiny bit ahead of AAA.

AAA - Good, but I'd go as far as to say it's the weakest of the early hit singles. Can't Explain is much better. Can't Explain is a blot on the escutcheon, G, a waste of time.

G's right that 'I Can't Explain' is better. 'Substitute' too. And of course 'My Generation' is more exciting. I agree about My Generation, but disagree about the other two. MG and AAA were The Who going for unexplored territory, Can't Explain was a Kinks pastiche and Substitute, nice as it is, could have been done by a dozen other bands of the time.

G's right that 'I Can't Explain' is better. Oh ffs all you revisionist children. It's the only poor single pre the descent into Tommy. And if you heard AAA Before MG when you were a teenager, you'd realize how utterly WRONG you both are.

Sod all the unnecessary 'context'. I Can't Explain has a punchier riff, as sharp as the crease on an Italian suit, a much groovier tempo ( it charges along, while 'Anywhere' is all stop and start), just a better tune all round.

Yeah, it's a pop song. AAA was a revolutionary statement AT THE TIME which is why the context is not unnecessary.
And we were asked about excitement, not trousers.

It's unnecessary if judging the better record..and it's bloody exciting!

They're all great for different reasons. How about a band with Steve Marriott on vocals, Keith Moon on drums, Steve Jones on guitar, and bass and production by Keith and Jimmy Miller.
