thanks for explaining about 'that's entertainment', J. i don't get the reappraisal for 'beat surrender', i've always considered it weak. i can see why 'town called malice' is up there, but i've never really warmed to it. i went for: 'A' bomb in wardour street, down in the tube station at midnight, strange town, when you're young, the eton rifles, going underground, start! and absolute beginners. if 'aunties and uncles' had been the a-side to 'news of the world', i would've gone for that. Start! over Dreams of Children?

i can see why 'town called malice' is up there, but i've never really warmed to it. It's wonderful. There's a touch of melancholy there which really lifts it, the organ wheezing through the verses about milk bottles. One of the rare occasions Weller demonstrated true talent and not just hectoring over his blokeish rhythm section.

There were three Jam eps from Funeral Pyre onwards that collected up these singles and charted as albums in the US.
(A lot of the b-sides are quite good/strong)

"Stop dreaming of the quiet life it's the one we'll never have."
It's like Harold Pinter picked up a guitar while listening to Motown.

Start! over Dreams of Children? yes! weller's best lead guitar break. i like 'dreams of children' well enough, but not as much as you. It would have been even better if ‘Taxman’ had not existed.

"Stop dreaming of the quiet life it's the one we'll never have." It's like Harold Pinter picked up a guitar while listening to Motown. It’s full of great lines: To either cut down on beer Or the kids’ new gear It’s a big decision in a town called Malice

i can see why 'town called malice' is up there, but i've never really warmed to it. I dont' like it very much either, although it's the only Jam song that did any damage in the US. It's a Motown pastiche with Weller's lyrics inserted over the top. Big deal.

Dreams of Children
Going Underground
Precious Town Called Malice
Funeral Pyre
A Bomb
Eton Rifles
...or something like that. The rest lumped pretty close together. Used to love "Tube Station" but find it a bit overdone when I hear it these days.

Is 'Malice' the go to Jam song for people who don't like The Jam? it is a great lyric for sure ( even if the pun of the title is a little pointless), but I'm pretty neutral about its warmed over Motown, there's something a little lightweight about the whole thing, despite Foxton's great baseline.

despite Foxton's great baseline (sic). i'm struggling to think of a more talented musician than foxton who went on such a downward spiral after such a brilliant early career. he was by far the best bass player to come out of punk. the poor sod is now making a living out of playing in a jam tribute band. what a waste of talent.

He has a weird square head with very far apart eyes. Rick Buckler looks even worse, like a brickie with a hangover and one 'O' level.
Is there any truth to the rumour that Weller hand-picked them to make him look better?
