A is nice and funny, but could improve with a singer who could sing. Anyway far from being a candidate to beat the greatness of B, no matter how obvious and overplayed this pick might be.

The Pooh Sticks
It’s all well and good to stick the boot in to C86ing student twats but the music’s just too close to what’s being attacked.
I can imagine THE PROF enjoying it, let that sink in.
Procol Harum
A stately procession that I quite like but it doesn’t lift off in the way I’d have liked. We have to mention the drumming when talking about The ‘rum don’t we? So, the drumming.

I've been deputed to do this by the god of grubbles because it's all about two things that make life worth sniffing, pooh and dogs
A A TVP homage, this one, Part-Time Punks for the indie generation. Nice guitar sound, groovy vocals. Drops its stink, then fucks off. Nice one
B I liked their earlier one, A Whiter Shade of Poo, about the halcyon days of bones, but despite the title, there's very little caninanity about this one. I don't like the sea. Damn stuff won't take my weight. And all that thumping and moaning – I get enough of that at home. Still it's a classic, isn't it - it's fucking Latin, after all? Too bad I'm of the Romantic persuasion. On the whole, I prefer Pleasures of the Harbour. By a factor of several million. Nice herring gulls at the end, off to steal some chips, I shouldn't wonder.

I was intending to follow my usual terse voting pattern but after the recent appeal and , moreover, having been assured that 'any old shite will do', I'll make an effort.
A wasn't bad but, like most things, I'm sure I'll have forgotten it by tomorrow. It's not helped by being up against one of my favorite bands from probably their best album so it's

I'll never get bored of shambling amateurism. I think there's something quite wonderful about the number of no-talent fuckwits who can cobble together a quick recording, work out a hook, and capture something of the human capacity for fun.
B is completely new to me, I sometimes wonder what dimension you lot live in. How is this overplayed? No-one else on earth can name two Procul Harum songs. Unfortunately, it sounds like Phil Collins having a shit in front of the London Philharmonic. I don't hear any ambition here, I hear cliché and pompous vocal straining. It's wretched, probably the worst track of the first round. Prog goons can fucking well keep it.

Problem with cliché is when it wasn't. If you are early enough, say '69, you may have set the standard and someone listening over 50 years later reacts to you as though you were the copier. Context is everything.

Exactly, wasn't specifically speaking to him, but something I have noticed as music boards and knowledge changes.

I grew up in the past. everything i LIKE is overplayed & overrated when I tell somebody I like it. it's a defense mechanism that I've learned to enjoy like a great clawing badger.
hey, I'll gladly listen to someone banging around in his socket set if he thinks he's making music. I might think so too. by the same token, I don't mind songs that take me back to happy times just by listening to them. I like the whole "sailor's graveyard" aspect of it and I think the arrangement is swell.
people who have never heard of Procul Harum are better off than those who have. LOL. I got my mind right.
I'm cool with whatever floats my boat just as I'm cool with whatever floats somebody elses. I love the singer, I love the song. I love the whole vibe of it. dip me in marzipan and put me in Granny's window with the other dated knick-knacks!

A is not for me. B just had to be faintly interesting to win this tie, and sure enough
