What do you think? The last one you think was a truly GREAT single.
Is it 'You Better You Bet', or something even more recent? 'Who Are You' maybe, or 'Squeeze Box'? Or is it really something earlier?

The Real Me/I'm One (though I'm not a huge fan of the album overall -- nice of them to put the two best songs on a single)

I quite like 'Who Are You'. Great? not sure. Daltrey's hard-man bullshit is in full effect, he looks like an utter wanka in the vid

I like it, and think it has a lot of the elements that make a hit, but i'm not sure if it's GREAT. Is it maybe just an unfair subconscious comparison of it against the band's 60s peaks that make us feel that way?

I think "You Better You Bet" is a good shout, although I'm not really familiar with anything that was released after that (except for "Don't Let Go The Coat", which I don't mind too much, but 'great', naaaah), and I refuse to accept earlier singles that were re-released on comps, etc. "Eminence Front" is decent, but again, I don't know if it falls under the category of 'great'.

Did they coast along for all those years from the very early 70s with just some 'quite good' singles?

Did they coast along for all those years from the very early 70s with just some 'quite good' singles? I guess. Now and again I come across high praise for The Who By Numbers - maybe the singles off that one were OK?

I like all the songs mentioned here too, but great?
I think of the Who like the Kinks. I think we give them a little bit of a pass if there's even a hint of their former greatness in a later song.
It's like watching an aging athlete who has an occasional good game again. It reminds the fans of the guy's former consistent greatness, but it also fools the athlete into thinking he "still has it."

I Can See For Miles
I love Dogs but it’s a small pleasure. Everything that came after was either an excerpt/preview from an LP or a holding-pattern offcut - those post-Who’s Next singles are ponderous Dogshit pointing the way to the (awful) Quad.

Last fairly great - 5:15 Last truly great - Pictures of Lily Last Transcendentally great - I'm a Boy Greatest of them all - Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere - the only challenger to the Pistols' first two singles for the British GOAT

Won't Get Fooled Again, even if it is truncated is the last great song they released as a single.
The Real Me and 5.15 are great but in an album track way not a single way to my ears.

yeah, I agree. I like "the seeker" and others but somebody would punch me if I called them "great" and I wouldn't blame 'em.
