i'm not a fan of costello. i don't mind some of his early singles, but i find his mannered vocals a real turn-off.
B is something of a curate's egg. i don't really know what to make of it. i like the guitar and the energy. something different.

Like 'Green Shirt' quite a bit. One of Costello's best.
But it's no competition for
B
I can already hear G saying 'it's not much of a song' and everybody else saying 'I've heard this before' - but it's enough to rattle my old bones

Never been a fan of Elvis...Electric Callas at least has some spiky, New Wavy energy to it..Vote B

I've always found Elvis to be a deeply dull songwriter, and even duller singer, his voice just annoys me. This is fairly typical of his vaguely quirky yet boring new wave. Devo in corduroy and leather elbow patches. After asking his mum if he can go out till 9pm.
Hmm, odd thing, feels vaguely retro, but that guitar has a lot of attack about it. One of those songs I feel I should dislike, but it has a nice bit of energy and charm about it. That guitar sound really is the killer, especially when it floats around quietly but aggressively in the background.

Not much of a Costello fan, but I've always liked this one, partly because the baroque prettiness of the tune forces The Attractions out of their pub rock comfort zone. Some arresting lines too which give it an edge. After a few distinctly third rate punk selections, we finally get a good one. They manage to find a twist on the well worn Stooges template. Not sure how! It's something to do with the weirdly compressed production, not unlike something like 'Nag Nag Nag' in a way. Liked this a lot, one of the discoveries of the cup for me so far.

A is one of the better Costello songs, and we're such a damned anti-Elvis board on the whole that I want to reward it for at least being somewhat choosy.
I'm grateful that B has some variation, because that main riff is a pretty ugly thing, with the plodding bass way overmixed for good measure.
Yeah, you got me. I AM going to say "not much of a song," although "heard this before" maybe not so much. It's not quite like anything else, but mostly because it's a bit inept both playing and production-wise.

A is ok, but i'm not a huge EC fan apart from some of his big hits. B has a great sound and gets an extra point for the surprise factor, so gets my vote here.

I declare myself a fan of early Costello, at least up to Imperial Bedroom, but this song is not one of my faves. I always find myself expecting it's going somewhere nicely but never getting there, like a failed intro. For the first two minutes of B it looked like an easy A win though. But then things started to happen reaching its peak with that two guitars plus organ interplay, towards a greatly done ending. This is what I can enjoy in a cup, a track out of my wheelhouse (hehe) that manages to bring some wow factor.

Count me firmly in the anti-Costello faction. Sorry A, but B gets this one despite being too long.

I guess it's a testament to how much EC is disliked around here that he's being trounced by the likes of that. Dont get me wrong - it's riffy enough but the vocal is pretty generic and gives it a "dress up in my big brother's clothes" sort of punk-come-lately feel. I'm not blind to his faults but I like him well enough to pick a song I like over one that I don't particularly.A

I don't like being forced into voting for Costello but Callas made me do it. Had it been Maria C, Costello wouldn't have stood a chance.

B is pretty lame, but I made it to the end. Luckily that cunt shut up for a minute or so in the middle. LuckY!
