I always liked 'em. I think their first couple of albums were promising and the next couple were very good indeed. somewhere along the line I think the albums got pretty spotty. even if I like all the songs something just rubs me the wrong way about how it all goes together. I like AP. I'm sure he's a handful but some of the interviews he's done are pretty lively. I waited in a LONG motherfucking line to get a copy of Apple Venus signed when it was new. the store management kept saying they had to cut it short but the two of them saw it through to the end. I guess I saw them through to the end too. honestly, I was more than a little bummed when they broke up. I liked that thing Partridge did with Robyn Hitchcock but it doesn't really sound like either was bringing their 'a' game.
Partridge had just as many twee songs as Moulding but I think having a mix kept the albums from sounding samey. "white music" was really pretty exciting to me when it was new. I can see that what was once new might sound pretty corny. "drums and wires" will always be a big record for me. things were changing in my situation and my outlook when I was hearing it. it annoyed the FUCK out of the people around me but it gets me in the same part of my guts that gets Beatles & Beach Boys. for all the braying and skittering it's really got a lot of heart that one.

I love Skylarking and the Dukes stuff (the only psych pastiche product I know of that actually works), and would probably love Oranges & Lemons almost as much if the mix wasn't so bright and clattery. Beyond that - some really wonderful tracks and a whole shedload that only a confirmed cultist (I know a few) could put up with much less love. Kinda like Elvis Costello. I'll also mention that they were a terrific live band (I never saw them myself, but I've heard/seen recordings) - too bad they couldn't have continued to be.

I never entirely bought the "stage fright" thing. That’s due to my suspicious nature, I suppose. I guess I'm one of the only people who thinks the "dated production" on Oranges and Lemons is one of it's strengths. I like about 4 tracks a lot but I think the rest is pretty meh. BUT, I just love hearing XTC get the "Big Time Record Making" sound even if I thought it was a real stretch as a double.
speaking of doubles, it was a couple of years before I heard "english settlement" as a double. Geffen put it out as a single and all my friendly neighborhood record stores charged DRUG DEALER PRICES for the import. I finally got it and I always liked it but I guess sometimes you pine for something and imagine it will be something it isn't. I like more than 4 songs - I'll give it that.
I was very keen on the first Plasticland lp. I never really got why people who would never give P.land the time of day would drop their pants over the Dukes. to each their own, I guess.
I always loved "little lighthouse" though.

I got the Drums&Wires set earlier this year. Tonnes of extras on the Blu-ray. An early pop memory was getting the Flexipop Ten Feet Tall b/W The Olympian (Skids), so I’m heading into nostalgia-land.
