I love that song by the Dramatics. Daniel Johnson is better served when other people do his songs. A

Poor Daniel doesn't stand a chance against a string-laden soul number that wouldn't sound out of place on the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack, but preludin(g)ers lap that shit right up. Walking the Cow is a lovely tune and Johnston hammers his little keyboard and sings the heck out of it as only he can.

Wasn't that Dramatics song in a previous Cup ? Didn't like it's overproduced, preachy BS before and less so now..DJ is simple, weird and enjoyable..Vote B

I'm going for B also. it feels a little weird. it's like a ventriloquist coming on after a family of acrobats. those acrobats worked really hard and the other guy is just a guy with a puppet in his lap. I guess what really matters is what works for you. I love "walking the cow". when people were giving me his cassettes I thought maybe he'd catch on a bit like R.Stevie Moore or Joseph Spence - you know, cool stuff but sort of obscure. stuff for people who shop at thrift stores & wear granny glasses.
this might still be true but it seems like he got quite a bit more attention that those other guys - partly for the wrong reasons but also because people hear something there.
there's something really weird about his best tracks. there's something a little unsettling but also something sort of simple in a good way. the Dramatics really worked up a sweat and I appreciate the effort. when you like something odd sometimes it feels good just to point at it and say "I like that"

Another tough one. All I got is "I'm glad these both exist," I'm afraid.
I've always found Johnston's audience a little troublesome - is it the music or the 'look at the monkey' aspect where the appeal lies? - but I can't deny the actual music (in as much as you can get past the rest) has real outsider charm. And he did have a sense of melody - it wasn't completely random. And he wasn't purposely singing off-key. Note that he didn't lose any of that when he had actual label budgets to work with.
Sentimentally, I want to give this to B. But I guess I feel in the end like A is just too much in the old whee...well, you know.

Yeah, this track has been used before, and it hasn't improved since the last time it was used. It'll be amazing how often you'll hear the word pretentious thrown around, but shit like this will get a free pass. Silly voices extraordinaire, a proper stinker.
And I don't actually own any Daniel Johnston, he's never been quite my bag of chips, but to my mind this shows the value of someone with little in the way of musical talent recording something. A bit like the Pooh Sticks track in round P, there's a humanity and a hook, and a heartfelt beauty that's entirely absent from A.

A has been round the cup block too many times, the picker could at least have considered some other Dramatics tracks. That aside, it's a powerhouse of a performance, arrangement and production, if not a great song necessarily. A psych soul classic. I'm wondering how to talk about B without sounding unkind. The support for it seems to be a "be kind to the special needs kid" thing because it has no musical quality at all and the vocal is just a joke that should never have been recorded.

I used The Devil once. It is a great blast of psych soul.

A is another track that was picked in a recent cup. Then as now I don’t hear its appeal. So this tie is B’s for the taking. Yes,

G expressed my opinion about Daniel Johnston better than I can. I feel a bit of embarrassment hearing his recordings, a bit like watching a freak show.
A sounds like production and arrangement departments have been in charge while songwriting was on maternity leave. But got a lucky tie.

A is bold, gripping
Daniel Johnson needs more words than I have time for right now. I don't like it that this is being dismissed. He did some amazing things. I just prefer 'The Devil is Dope' to that one.
