A thread dedicated to the pursuit of physically going to a shop to buy things. I started this because of the new Russian supermarket that has opened up on these shores, Mere. In other SHOPPING news, I went to the sporting equivalent, SPORTS DIRECT, yesterday to buy my son a pair of new football boots. They had loads on offer and we were able to buy that and a new ball for under £50 in around 10 minutes. There's also a new ITALIAN DELI in Tunbridge Wells that directly imports fruit and veg from Italy, so I can get my SICILIAN LEMON fix.

I am delighted to see that M&S have started to stock fresh THAI BASIL.
I can't see me bothering with Mere.

I also bought a Magic Mop (for our new bathroom) from WILKO.
I did peruse the suits in M & S, but have to say I was disappointed by the selection. I do have a couple of suits from them but in the two years I've been teaching they've become a little threadbare.

I went to the Edinburgh IKEA on Thursday. It was late when I got there (about 7 pm) so it was quiet. I bought a CUTLERY SET! and BED LINEN. And a CHOPPING BOARD and two MASON JARS. I was very happy with the purchases.

I was very happy with the purchases. Even though I rarely shop there nowadays, the IKEA EXPERIENCE always has a frisson of something. It's probably a mixture of the sheer range of things on sale, the competitive price and a little smattering of "oooh that's nice". Even if their stuff is everywhere and has been for 30 years, that Scandi touch is still very appealing.

Tory did you pull rank and say black football boots with no hint of colour like all football boots should be? None of your attention seeking colour boots nonsense.

'Mere' sounds like the ulster scots for 'more', a brand shop you'd expect to find in Norn iron or Scotland.

I bought three vases in an auction yesterday.. does that count? I'm very excited by them. I bought one of them believing it to be a Kralik ( a Bohemian glass maker similar to Loetz)) piece from the 1900s. Further research hasn't disabused me of that. The other two I believed to be French from the 1930s. I've now found out one of them was made in the States in the 30s, but from a mould produced in France, so I was half right. There will be collectors for that in The States. The other vase is still a mystery, but I know it's high quality so I have high hopes!

Doesn't seem to matter where I go, If I need/want something and can afford it, then, put it in the bag. And I'm gone. Out of there. No perusing for me. I just don't have the patience. Most of the time.
Ikea, although I haven't been in years, was a bit different though. A) I never went there alone. B) The locations are always a bit out of the way for someone with no car. C) The layout of the store, especially in the furniture areas, were always set out a bit like maze, forcing you through the whole store unless you deliberately took short cuts, not always easy with a cart and company.
I suppose I'm a little bit the same whenever I go to my grocery store (which is really close by). Even if I only need a couple of things, I often meander all the aisles "just to see".
