this one's tough! man, I just love that first guy's singing voice but I think this love is edged out by BI love how it starts out all moody and ends up being a Million Dollar Movie/Love Unlimited Orchestra type thing. I'm going to play that music, run up the steps of city hall, kiss my sweetheart and save my city!

Two huge 70s icons for me (the first one's Mr. O'Sullivan, for those unaware) in their not-greatest moments.
B is slick and somewhat cheesy, but at least it's by somebody who knew what the funk they were doing.
Nice to hear the eccentricities were already in place for ol' Gil, but the period arrangement just doesn't meet him halfway, and they do each other no favors.
It was early yet.

Don't see the point of A, and B was fantastic.

really bizarre pairing. i had to come back to it. i'm more familiar with the gilbert pick, which i like but have to be in the mood for.
the page selection is fine, but i'm getting a bit fed up of the 70s soul/funk selections.
i'm going to flip a coin rather than abstain. heads A, tails B.

A is an interesting curio for me, but not much more than that and can't really see myself searching for it again. B is fab and fits snuggly next to the coffee table in my WHEELHOUSE.

Is A Gilbert O'Sullivan? The vocal is a bit affected, and I kept expecting the drums to kick in. It was interesting but not great.
B is an easy win here, if a bit more of a safe choice (in terms of the style, not the specific artist/tune). I do really like it THO' - going to investigate a bit. First time THAT'S happened in a while in this CUP FROM HELL

A is like George Formby goes blues. Not a good thing.
I used to push this track quite a bit on BCB back in the day, but this isn't my pick. Page is up there with the likes of Johnny Pate, Richard Evans and Leroy Hutson in that great period of black cinematic soul arrangers. This is wonderful - the epic way the track is announced and then glides into that lush melodic theme. Just a very beautiful record.
Easily B

A sounds like it could be the theme tune for a British kids program sung by the bastard child of Paul McCartney and Leon Redbone. Can't say I'm too keen on it.
I like a bit of Barry White production (if what it says on that spinning label is correct), and I found myself getting completely enthralled by the rhythm guitar playing - there's some really great stuff going on there.

A is a really shit cover of the Trumpton opening titles.
B is an elevator in a shopping mall.

Gilbert was a curious artist, started off well with the album Himself and then alone again naturally but imo it was all downhill after that. No idea when this was made but it's a bit music hall-y and not for me.
B was just superb and headed for my Spotify playlist

I also had a pre-O'Sullivan demo on CBS - thought he had only made the one, but this came first. My one was better, though. Can't say I'm particularly enthusiastic about this song or performance, but...
Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra were a blot on the 1970s. This is dogshit. At least they haven't let El Gordo near the mic, but his vile schtick and grotesquely unctuous persona is all over this piece of gushy fluff. Fucking awful. I mean, really, really bad. How's this getting any votes. It's a disgrace: what a bunch of Grannies.
The luck of the Irish here, A
