Markus reckons 'Heatwave' goes to shit for the chorus. He might be right - although I'm sure fans won't agree (you can justify any musical decision, can't you? - 'ooh it serves as a contrast' or a supercilious 'I think McCartney knew what he was doing'). Listening again, it does sound like half-arsed, a kind of 'running on the spot' effort, shrill and shouty where the verses are delicate:
This one bothers me more. The verses are beautiful, a fine vocal melody, effortless key-changes (at least I think they're key changes!) - but when the chorus comes in (actually it starts with the chorus, but you know what I mean) it's like a rugby team crashing ballet practice:
any others?

No, Heatwave's perfect. It's the punchy release of the chorus, achieved by that rise, that partly makes it great. I'll nominate Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. The verses are magical, but the chorus has always sounded a bit clunky and clumsy to me. It breaks the spell.

Devil's advocate question: Aren't choruses generally a bit shit anyway? Aren't they the repetitive, crass, simplistic bit that's put there for people with short attention spans?

"Walk Upon the Water" by The Move: the verse and bridge are both great pre-psych Who-type drones, but the verse is lowest common denominator comedy music with overexaggerated accents. I still like it (and this live version cooks), but it could have been GREAT. "Here We Go Round the Lemon Tree" and "Yellow Rainbow" are similar.

The Move suffer from that a lot eg Chinatown.
Probably a function of having three (or more) band members needing input. Often a Move song has at least one over-embroidered part. Still a fine fine group.

Still a fine fine group. Yeah, seems like they hit upon the "high silly voices for the chorus" thing, maybe because it worked. It is memorable. It's just that, when the balance isn't right, it comes across as annoying too. I love 'Chinatown' myself but yeah.

I always took it as a Roy Wood thing, he has a tendency towards cabaret in his songwriting.

I know many of you here don't like the band's music, full stop, but i enjoy classic 70s Aerosmith and still dig a lot of Tyler's lyrical word play from their best tunes... but damn, the chorus to this one is almost too simple.
