No worries, thus far we've only missed something about Steely Dan.

You need better material, Gav. Time to rip it up and start again.

I'd be up for that, yeah.
I was hoping maybe we'd get one or two more signing up. Where's Jimmy O?

I haven't really been able to listen to the last two or three samples by the way 'cos I'm not home. After next Sunday I'll be able to contribute.

Somebody should write about 'Jingle Bells' or the Cheeky Girls or 'Break My Stride'.

‘Tinderbox’ by Siouxsie and the Banshees

Tinderbox Siouxsie and the Banshees
I’d been a fan for 2-3 years, from my early teens. Started with the greatest hits comp, through ‘Nocturne’, to all their earlier albums, which were all varying levels of great, with the debut and ‘Juju’ being particular favourites.
They’d had some great guitarists; always inventive, and decidedly ‘not rock’, and they had a new one on board, who’d debuted on ‘The Thorn’ EP. John Valentine Carruthers was previously with Clock DVA, of which I knew nothing. Still don’t. Darkness Fish likes them, so they’re probably awful.
The album came out to a fanfare with a lead single ‘Cities in Dust’, about Pompeii. I thought it wasn’t that good to be honest. A bit contrived. It’s my least favourite track on the album. The second single ’Candyman’ was about paedophiles. This was before the media, and society in general, made this subject commonplace in conversation. Musically, it was a lot more interesting. JVC had a great sound, and a great riff to go with it. The cover has, as my dad pointed out, a phallic symbol on it- a giant cock as a Maypole. Risqué!
The rest of the album was a real treat. The singles were on side one, with another couple of tracks (The Sweetest Chill, and This Unrest) which were a sublime one-two; lovely and atmospheric. I don’t think Sioux ever sang better.
Side 2 is great from start to finish.
‘Cannons’ was inspired by, I think, the Spanish who used to fire cannons at the sky to provoke rain during a drought. They evolved to chucking donkeys off church towers. What next? Who’d write a song like that now ?
Every song on this record is different, musically, subject-matter, ‘vibe’.
‘Party’s Fall’ is probably the ‘poppiest’ tune on the disc. Pleasant, but not outstanding.
92 degrees is 10/10. Starts with a dude complaining about the heat, and a slowish riff, that kind of reflects the temperature, and as the song progresses and the temperature increases, the urgency and energy in the song builds. This is next-level song construction. Love it
‘Land’s End’, the closer, is another song that builds from a slow start to something really dynamic, and evocative.
Carruthers was brilliant on this album, and it’s a shame they didn’t make more original music together. Sioux was at the peak of her powers. She seemed to go sour after this. Severin was this group’s musical secret weapon. Never heard him play a normal ‘rock’/blues progression. It’s a completely different vocabulary to most music I listen to now, but 30 odd years ago I took it for granted. Budgie was the overt non-secret weapon. His performance on this album is stellar, for the same reasons as Severin. No clichés. There is no one like him, and he’s still a seeker.
