Should we have a members-only Exchange & Mart, as some other forums I could name do? Do you (or anyone else here) have anything to sell, Charlie? It seems like people are just posting 'funny' there...

a bloody waste of time, although i was impressed by the speed that ray pushed it through.
if you are considering culling it, JC, can i also suggest that you take a close look at the R & R forum.

If the subforums are used then they should stay. I'll give them both a week.

Ray? Really...I don't want to throw my weight around but if nobody's using the subforums then why keep them? that's all I'm saying I put it up because Charlie asked for it - it's intended as a place to share music files, and like its equivalent on BCB, and unlike every other is hidden from everyone except members: it is, after all, theoretically illegal to share files. So just leave it in case anyone wants it.
And R&R is there for people like me who like quizzes and don't want to wade through the rest of the shit to get to them, and for the people who don't like them and aren't interested, they don't have to look. It's in the nature of them to not get many replies, but for those who are interested to come back to them, and they might not want to dig through pages of the pointless crap that gets started in General in order to find them.
Personally, I think as many sub-forums as possible is a good idea. They're there if someone wants to use them. I get it that some people prefer the Jimbo option of one big bearpit, but if people want that, what's wrong with just looking at Recent Posts, which jumbles everything together?
What I'm saying basically is that the best thing to do as a forum is to provide people with as many options as possible to do what they want. There's no ego or vanity involved: if I had my way there would be separate ones for politics (to avoid it), visual arts, books, sport, personal stuff, and anything else anyone asked for. If they don't don't get used as often as the clamorous egomaniacs want, why shut them down? Just don't look.

yes, me too! i've long pushed for separate sports and BCB gossip forums and i would be delighted with a separate 'books and podcast' and 'politics' forum too. i can't get my head around why anyone would be opposed to them other than for ego reasons. the notion that someone interested in politics would not want to click on a politics subforum is baffling. and i get that JC doesn't like sport, but surely he'd prefer the option of ignoring it all together rather than encountering it in 'General'?

There was a call for an 'exchange' section, which suggests that it was wanted. And all we've had so far is people acting the goat.
I'll leave it for a while but if continues to be a playground then it goes. I don't think that's controversial.
If there's enough demand and enough traffic for other sections (sports, politics) then they can be opened up too. But even though we've been pretty lively over recent weeks, I don't see a reason to open anything else up yet as there doesn't seem to be enough interest in those specific areas to justify it.

To justify what exactly? The two minutes it will take me to set it up? Its place on the front page?
What I could do is set up a new category called Esoterica or Sub-Lieutenant or Specific or something else to distinguish it from general, move Exchange & Mart, Cups, & R&R in there, set up other boards for Sport & Games, Books and podcasts, visual arts, creative writing, photography, and/or any other niche interest people suggest. And leave general (the category) with music, general the board, and the wasteland of film and TV. I can even fix it so that people who hate the idea would not even see it on the front page.

Fair enough, Ray. It just annoyed me that something set up in good faith just attracted daft nonsense and nothing else. It doesn't take any effort to do what you did, true, but it looks stupid when it's misused. I take a wee bit of pride in the board.
Good idea to post Discogs links there.

I have no problem with looking stupid: I've lived with it for 72 years now . I hope others put up discogs links, too, and yes, I am looking at you. And etsy, e-bay, whatever's going. File-sharing links, too, if that's still a thing and you guys still listening to music aren't doing it all on SpottyFly and other screaming 'services'

I think the daft nonsense will settle down in due course. The novelty will wear off. It always does. And if I'm wrong... well, what's wrong with some daft nonsense now and again? (I do occasionally have something where I think it would be nice to share this in case anyone's interested... It will be put to use.)

How about a 5 minute edit allowance on new posts that allows for corrections, rather than showing immediately that it was edited?

That's advanced stuff. We need a real wizard for something like that.
