it's good to see both ry cooder and the sitar get some justice after the appalling picks in the previous rounds.
the comet is coming bring ub40's 'food for thought' into the 2000s. i can imagine JC bouncing off the walls of his whitehaven abode while listening to this. needless to say, it's terrible.

Great start! A has been a fave for years now; as someone who has a pretty low tolerance for sitar, this one hits the spot just right. But i am going with B here for being both a killer groove and a more surprising pick; what a fab mix of sounds.

Yes, good start! A is away from my comfort zone, but I did enjoy it nonetheless. Had no idea of Ry Cooder's involvement*. There was a moment in B when I started thinking "this is going for too long", and right there it took an unexpected turn that decided my vote. Well done both. B
*but my pick in the R round was better

Two really refreshing tracks to kick things off with. I like A's muddy, woozy groove and it's got a sense of play and adventure that's often missing from Ry's later, more traditionally authentic approaches. Doesn't really go anywhere as an instrumental, it comes across more like a studio jam, but I enjoy it a lot for what it is.
I wish more people would put together techno and jazzy saxophone, the results are almost always good. This builds with real purpose and drive. Shabaka Hutchings is such a fresh, exciting new voice in British jazz (and I have Preludin to thank for alerting me to him) and this is progressive in all the right ways.

E minor's a pretty good chord. You can play E minor over and over again, and most people won't even notice you're only playing E minor over and over again and never changing to a different chord. E minor is very versatile that way.
B's got good sax riffage. Nice.

A is awesome - surprised I haven't heard it before.
Stuff like B has very limited appeal for me. The sax playing's nice, but the mechanized groove kills what little momentum it's able to raise on its own.

Absolutely B. It’s been on constant rotation for a year or so.

Not a bad pair but I'll go for A as I'm a sucker for sitars in the right place

Hmm. A sounds like a clumsy demo for Trout Mask Replica, the drums are really bad, and it doesn't really hang together at all.
I thought The Comet is Coming was that American band who had Ben Chasny in, but were a much more crappy hard rock thing than his 6 Organs of Admittance stuff. Who was that? So this is Shabaka Hutchings again, who's sax is always a joy to hear, but I feel that the electronics are badly handled, doesn't really fit the music, and seems added in quite an unadventurous and fairly cheap way. Could've done with a Leafcutter John. A step down from Sons of Kemet, for sure, but Shabaka's sax is better than the rubbish demo stylings of A.

Cheers, G. Just needed a breather, and time to get some work stuff done. Not sure I should really be back yet, to be honest, but I guess it's my duty to ruin the cup for someone...

A was desperately uninteresting. It sounded vaguely appealing for about 20 seconds but there really was nothing there to hang your hat on.
The Comet is Coming! I remember them placing high in the end-of-year polls a short while back. This is as lazy and undeveloped as the first track.
Jam-swill for the undiscriminating.
Abstain.

B - The Comet Is Coming is one of the very few albums released over the past 5 years that I've actually bought -- that and the related Shabaka and the Ancestors.
