i had no idea ole was still in the cup! i quite enjoyed the veloso track and appreciate the picker thinking outside of the box. maybe a bit too long, and it sounded like some bum notes were hit vocally.
it's hard not to be lifted by the montez track despite it being a well worn golden oldie.
tough one this, but since i'm unlikely to return to veloso...

Tough call. Man, they're kinda diametrical opposites, but both are very much in my WHEELHOUSE. A is just sheer abandon, fun sounds for a party. B is gentle and sensitive, a tune to enjoy some introspection to. Gah... maybe just coz it's a bit of a deeper pick...

Hmmm, a well-known classic, and deservedly so, vs an odd pick, pleasant and deep that probably calls to be heard outside the cup environment. Think I'll go for the latter.

Not to deny there's plenty of great songs among the hundred or so that I've been hearing fairly regularly my entire life, but I'm generally unlikely to vote for them in a cup like this, and A is definitely one of them.
B won't play for me, but assuming it's this one:
it's a bit lugubrious for my taste, but I like it well enough and it's new to me.

A reluctant vote for A, it is indeed acknowledged as a classic but I find it rather corny. Tbh I'm rather indifferent to b.

A is one of those tracks that seems to have been around since William The Conquerer. Whilst it's difficult to dislike something so intrinsically good natured as this track, I can't say I've ever been much of a fan either, mainly because there's something irritating about that cheap sounding organ riff that dominates the track. It's a shame that things like B aren't better appreciated in cups. There's probably something too subdued and introspective for the kind of fast consumption the cup encourages ("impress me NOW, I haven't got all day" . However I can see why the picker finds this entrancing, it has some lovely melodic moments and is beautifully sung. Reminded me of Leonard Cohen in many ways (which hadn't occured to me with the other Veloso albums I have). B

Well, is this the clarion call for people who thought there were too many obscurities in the cup? I actually like this track an awful lot, the drums are as cool as, and it feels somehow more energetic and emotive than it actually is. A cheap organ, an ok vocal, good drums, and yet it sounds huge when you don't really listen to it.
I think the only Caetano Veloso related thing I own is a cover by Olof Arnalds, which is a strange meeting of climates. No idea what he's muttering on about here, but it's pretty enough to get by on instrumentation and quality of voice alone. I could definitely be tempted to delve further, there's a proper artistry at work here. Lovely pick, cap-doff, etc.

Oh, it's been AGES since I heard 'Let's Dance'! Have you noticed the way he sings the title? 'LEH DANCE'! I love that. It's a great song.
I love the early Veloso stuff - 'Tropicalia' is an amazing piece of music - but this is just a bore. Sorry.

B -- I haven't heard it before, but I have a good chunk of his 60's through mid 70's albums. It's not as good, but good enough.

Crikey, a blast from the past. I was 14 when this came out. I didn't buy it but I know it well. What is it with Hispanic Americans and that rinky-dink organ sound? Started with Dave Baby Cortez, carried on with this, then Sam the Sham and ? & the Mysterians. There's a case for calling this pre-pre-punk: it's certainly got the simplicity and the energy. Nice to hear it again. It's been a while.
Sorry picker, not for me.
