i don't know why but i was expecting 'heads hands and feet' to be PROG. they are from it. this track has that brown sound and reminds me a little of the band.
that heron album is amazing and the picker has probably selected the best track from it.

I played B and liked it, but then I listened to A. I think part of it is it's 6:30 in the morning and A hit that sweet spot.

Heron I've always enjoyed and this is no exception.
Exactly the opposite for HH and f they were plugged/hyped ceaselessly during the very early seventies and they never made one piece of music that I ever wanted to listen to again. This track is part of the then prevalent obsession with the Band's first two albums.

Former Mojo and BCB poster Joe Baxter was a huge HH&F fan. He mailed me three CDR of their records (those were the days!) but they never clicked for me. This track is no exception, nothing wrong but nothing interesting. And the Band resemblance certainly doesn't help.
Didn't know that Heron record. Looks worth checking.

Brown Sound Knockdown!!
God, were there a million bands like A in the UK from 69-71 or what? Nice, but doesn't really do enough to stand out from the pack.
I liked B a lot more than I expected. Ragged but spirited. I know Albert Lee's on guitar, but it's the piano (Mike O'Neill, I'm assuming?) that's hitting the spot at the moment.

I thought A was pleasant, though a little generic. But the harmonies and mandolin were pleasurable enough. There's something about B that doesn't work for me, but I'm struggling to identify what. It's like the melody goes in the wrong direction or it increases in volume in the wrong places or something; just a strange "off" quality about the whole thing.

... it increases in volume in the wrong places or something; just a strange "off" quality about the whole thing. Yeah, same for me. I think it's the drums/cymbals - to my ears it sounds like they are mixed WAY up front, and as the drummer is bashing them so much it seems to overpower the tune. That said though, i like B here. As hatzy says, that pianer player is putting in some killer work, and when the drummer isn't hogging the sonic landscape there is a good bluesy tune here. A is pretty and has nice harmonies, but didn't make as much of an impression. B

I was hoping for something folkier and more pastoral for A, hoped it might've been an obscure left-over from the psych-folk scene (like that great Extradition pick), but this feels more dragged to earth by it's pop-rock sensibility. An Every Rose Has It's Thorn for the 1970s. The vocals are kinda annoying in a McCartney way.
Unfortunately, B sounds closer to that horrible Mott the Hoople pick from earlier in the cup, but presumably from the other side of the Atlantic. Clunky, good ole beer-swillin' rock bollocks that does nowt fer me. Nice horns though.

I'm really trying to avoid saying songs are 'boring' or 'dull' or similar, but A fits the description so neatly - it's sleep-inducing, just a drippy effort without any redeeming qualities.
B wins by default but it's cat crap

I'd only listen to either one on a bet. B needs the vote.
