the agent orange pick is a strange one for the final. i did quite well with my own 'third-rate punk' selections, but this feels like a step too far.
alcon shades is solid enough, but lacks a bit of spark. the picker will be relieved with this draw.

A manages to sound overlong at under 2 minutes, such was its relentless anger. The Cramps-ish guitar solo enlivened things a bit, but I can't say I enjoyed the rest of it. It was uncompromising, for better or for worse. For a straight soul/funk record B has a few idiosyncratic touches - the rising layered vocal intro, the hippieish middle eight with the flute - and they give the track a lot of offbeat colour. Love the clattering drumming and the cool insouciance of the vocal. The whole thing has a kind of life affirming joy to it. Not a difficult choice here..B

A is just one dimensional, normally it's easy to be charitable to tracks under two minutes but not in this instance.
B is pleasant to listen to but not much more, still an easy choice

I'm feeling A's California surf punk vibes more than I'm feeling B's brunch vibes at this particular moment in time.

These both fall short of shining examples of their respective ilks, but are at least fairly deep cuts.
B is more in my wh...you know.

Two tracks I'm not likely to come across ever again. And I'm not going to miss them TBH.
I'll go for B in spite of there being not much of a song, not much of a singer and not much of a band. But then A...

Ooh, entirely generic punk without any anger, energy, invention, and recorded well after the bandwagon had set sail (at least it's an eco-friendly bandwagon, this one). Not sure why you'd pick something this flat and dated. chug chug chug chug.
B seems a bit of a desperate obscuro funk comp pick, but it gets lucky here by way of not really having any competition. Once again, the drumming is really the only element of quality, and those backing vocals make me feel almost physically sick they're that off-putting and queasy sounding.

Agree with a lot of what's been said so far, and I'm going to go for
A
mainly because I prefer it - altho' it's no great shakes - but I'm tired of this kind of thing being put down in favour of some sap crying over the sound of a waterfall

You've become very jaded about music recently. Ah well..you'll always have The Rattles and Lieutenant Pigeon.

You've become very jaded about music recently. It's funny you should say that, because recently I feel like I'm really getting into music again! I've been buying a fair bit of vinyl, listening a lot at home (radio as well as my own collection), there have even been a few discoveries. I think the problem with this cup is, as you and others have already said, the choices are mostly very personal and therefore don't appeal to voters who don't share the same specific enthusiasms. There's no attempt to compromise.

I've never attempted to compromise really. Maybe when there were lists I would throw in the odd familiar track, especially in the days when we didn't have YouTube links. But the list competition was a different thing really. Since they've become song v song, I've just gone with whatever appealed on the day I was picking them. What has changed is it's got a lot harder to please people. It's got too negative for me now..but we'll continue that conversation when we have the cup post mortem.
