what a lovely selection the olivia tremor control track is. has a beach boys feel to it. short and concise.
christ, another bloody jazz track. if this were a jazz cup i'd be more inclined to give it a chance, but i'm completely od'd on it now.

A is nice and short - I'll give it that - but there doesn't seem to be much happening there. Surprised to find they're an Elephant 6 band; wasn't there a bit more eccentricity built into the rest of them? This just sounds like a pleasant enough bit of sunshine pop. I'm not hearing any particular personality brought to it. B is of course pretty much a cliché standard jazz track around here (not to mention quite similar to what knocked me out of this competition - not that I'm bitter ), but the playing is strong enough, and there's enough musical variation, to win me over in the end.

I agree with Hatz that A doesn't do much, but I don't think it needs to do much. It just creates this hazey, dazed late summer vibe and is all rather lovely for it. Would've been even better with a decent vocalist though. B feels a little standard after all the jazz picks, even a little academic. It's fine, but isn't really doing it for me.

Olivia Tremor Control did much better than that daft piece of fluff. The arrangement is horrible, the whole thing sounds like it's been stood on.
The jazz selection has more to it, but it's hardly setting the night on fire

A -s pretty fine. I'm not a huge Nelson fan, I even find Blues and the Abstract Truth a little dull, and I usually like my jazz in a smaller group setting.

A wasn't bad at all. B was ok but it went on too long.

I don't know if Olivia Tremor Control was just three random words thrown together, but I do like the name, it flows off the tongue. The song is very slight, and another retro-fit, but I like the use of timpani or whatever is doing the percussion. Short and slight and quite sweet.
There's definitely more to life than be-bop and garage rock. Not actually a bad track, but y'know, enough was enough a while back.

I have voted for a lot of jazz picks in previous rounds and in the final, but B has left me cold. The main theme at the start sounds terribly lazy, just a repetition of the same scales over a chord sequence. G mentioned 'academic' and that's how I feel it. Solos are ok, but hardly memorable. A rather mediocre pick if you ask me.
A has the right amount of weirdness over the sweet melody to pick my interest and hold it for the short duration of the song - not sure I would maintain it much longer.

O was a really difficult letter for someone of my tastes. I actually had Olivia Tremor Control on my shortlist, but in the end, I decided that 24plus minutes of Green Typewriters would have tested the forebearance of even the saintliest of voters. (not very) fun fact: Dusk at Cubist Castle was the first CD I bought - it could even be argued that it was the reason I bought a CD player, as it wasn't available on vinyl. I always preferred the band's really weird dreamy and found sounds stuff to more straightforward pop outings like this one though. Short and not particularly sweet
I never considered Mr Nelson of course, but as he is the main protagonist on one of the few jazz albums I own(ed), and I'm in a relatively good mood, I thought I'd actually listen to this. I enjoy ON's tone, but this track's a bit of a chore - I find the round the kit in under a second drumming particularly intrusive throughout, while the piano assaulter can do one, frankly.
Sigh

Oh, great match. One of the very best so far. A is just a beautiful little melody, full of atmosphere and gentle charm. And B is an exquisitely played and arranged jazz piece, full of emotion and wit. Sadly, many of you can't appreciate that.

the O.Nelson is lovely. I feel funny going for A nobody in that outfit is anywhere near the musician that ON is but musicianship is only part of the equation, doncha think?
I liked them better as they went along. It seems like they thought since they were using recording techniques so similar to 4-track that it would sound "period". wrong. that's what I liked about them. they were twitterpated by your older brother's record collection but they were very much of their time. lots o' enthusiasm, that's for sure.
