Damn, Shpongle is such an unfortunate name. It sounds horrible, and the music i just listened to is NOT horrible. I liked that a whole lot, thanks picker. A real mix of sounds, dancey funky cool, right in my WHEELHOUSE. B is of course pretty great, but the surprise of the new is enough to edge it here.

Shpongle
Fucking hell, the Dreadzone/Ozric Tentacles mash up that we’ve all been waiting for.
Shangri-La’s
Desperate to shore up at least one win, the picker pulls out a real obscurity here. I hope G the mod can persuade another few voters to change their choice because this type of lazy shit is JUST NOT ON IN A CUP FINAL.

A started off ok but got increasingly silly as it went along.
B is a safe pick but what the hell, it's a great one.

B is the one famous Shangri-Las track I never really warmed to.
I'll happily go for the improbably named Shpongle. Its dance groove isn't quite my cup of tea, but there's a lot happening, I really like the guitar bit in the second half and found myself putting it on repeat!!
Great pick, A

We also had a dense and luscious California zinfandel AND a sprightly Ontario pinot noir. Lovely stuff.

So, it's come to this.
Everyone here who has been paying the least bit of attention (which is probably everyone, now that Markus isn't here) knows that I love the Shangs, and indeed they were the very first name on hippiedrill's shortlist for the final. But, everybody knows their great singles - and indeed Out in the Streets is definitely one of those, so I thought, best go for something more obscure, perhaps one of the Mercury sides, such as Sweet Sounds of Summer or Footsteps on the Roof, but even then I thought it would be too obvious for some, so trawled through my iTunes. It could have been the deranged humorous punk of The Shapes, possibly Sandy Denny, The Shoes, Spirit, Steve Miro, Super Furry Animas, Small Faces or Spacemen 3: but eventually I settled on two basically instrumental psychedelic bands I'd been introduced to by some of the young scamps on imdb in the early noughties, The Shalabi Effect and Shpongle, both bands I hadn't really thought of in a decade. I listened to literally a dozen or so tracks from both - which is some undertaking, as they both like to stretch out - and ultimately I thought the board would prefer some genuine psychedelia (made by psychenauts for psychenauts) to Mr Shalabi's Middle Eastern guitar workouts (I remembered how Explosions in the Sky were dismissed in the qualifying rounds) so I went with Shpongle. I was going to go with the near nine minutes of Star-Shpongled Banner, maybe Connoisseur of Hallucinations, Monster hit or Shpongle Falls all as long, with some nice trippy visuals, but then I thought that the ow attention span drive-by voters won't listen to them all the way through, wont appreciate the twists and turns, the surprises, so I better go short and I chose the three-minute perfection of The Nebbish Route, which manages to showcase many of the disparate elements of their sound. And then I saw that it had been drawn against the Shangs, and I knew it had lost. I could live with that, but dismissing something because you don't like the name of the band? Oh, DO fuck off. Sure, OitS is a classic, but A

Sure, OitS is a classic, but AI'm just shocked you picked something with a flute! Small steps, but it's a start. I'll have you digging Bobbi Humphreys within a year!
