It's decent, well chosen, shows the tune has good bones.

I prefer it to the original, if damning with faint praise is good enough for you.

I don’t like it
Mega-coincidence: I’d just put Drums and Wires on when I clicked on that link, not knowing it was XTC-related

Well, she definitely sings more pretty than the old crank. But she also pretty much removes all the intensity and turns it into something joyful and celebratory, which I don't think it's intended to be. I think it's supposed to feel a bit overwhelming, and she turns it into a pretty little number.
Ask Partridge if he likes it. I bet he'd give you an earful.
It's got some nice things about it, and she's got a nice voice, and she certainly shows her good taste by choosing it. But 'good cover' as far as bringing something of herself to it, or finding something new in the song that gives it a thoughtful interpretation? Nope.

I don't know if the change of tone in the song is a bad thing, however. With Partridge, almost everything is tense - I think he's probably a pretty tense guy, overall. She definitely takes a more optimistic approach in her singing, letting the lyrics be the bad cop to her good cop. He may not have liked it, but I bet he cashed the checks.

Kind of hard, I imagine, for anyone but Andy Partridge to bring themselves to this song. These people are rushing through the thing — maybe AP can make sense of the lyrics at that pace, but no one else can. It's too dense. She has no idea what she's singing about and it comes across purely as an attempt to prove she has "good" taste.

The old hacks in the band have obviously pressured her into it.
Needs some fucking love indeed.

People say the same thing to me when I put an Extra album on the turntable.

Dead eyed Karaoke and the album it's on is even worse..12 songs of lazy,"band playing at the Disneyland Tomorrowland Terrace" level performances 1. "Senses Working Overtime" (XTC cover) 2. "The Whole of the Moon" (The Waterboys cover) 3. "Can We Still Be Friends" (Todd Rundgren cover) 4. "I Feel the Earth Move" (Carole King cover) 5. "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" (Elton John cover) 6. "Drop the Pilot" (Joan Armatrading cover) 7. "Moonshadow" (Cat Stevens cover) 8. "One Way or Another" (Blondie cover) 9. "Breaking Us in Two" (Joe Jackson cover) 10. "Anticipation" (Carly Simon cover) 11. "Help Me" (Joni Mitchell cover) 12. "Have a Little Faith in Me" (John Hiatt cover) It does seem a bit of an attempt at "I'm not just a pop singer, I like real songs" cred.
