Madchester, Britpop, Creation and maybe shoegaze and Butthole Surfers Butthole Surfers, definitely. Would anyone put Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips in that category?

Probably, but he has some variance, the others I listed are well written, well played, well recorded but ultimately generic and samey. They all had drug culture connections which also can add to a certain delusional group think that probably lead the to think they were greater/more adventurous than they were. (Another one would be all the one sound/one note stoner bands that just drone on and on, as you well know back in the day other than AM shit like Abba, Osmonds, etc., all other musics were amenable to stoner use. And the heavy albums these bands seek to emulate had lots of variance in acoustic/electric and darkness/light).

It's a pernicious myth that drugs can turn mediocre musicians into something transcendent and has led a culture where young creatives minded people rely on green, cocaine or even smack to get into the zone.
Really sad man.
I'm not anti-drugs by any stretch of the imagination but it's tragic when you see someone naive enough to think that drugs will elevate them or their art; I've seen it happen.
I also think there is a lot of projection from the fans of the music who indulge in certain drugs while listening to the music and assume the creators must have been using the same drugs to create it.....
That all being said it has been said there is nothing better than having a Patsy Clines while listening to 70s disco.......
