Great player, good guy. Always hugely impressed with a recovering addict who sticks with the programme.
Oddly enough he came to mind yesterday as I was walking the dog. Such a witty player.

I just posted this in the Guardian:
Some time in the late 1960s, I was standing on the Lower Shelf, near the halfway line, for a game against Leicester. Greaves picked up the ball not far away from me, and went on a run - well, more like a speedy amble - with it towards the Paxton Road. I had a perfect view as he effortlessly beat four or five players, leaving more than one on their backside, and then wandered around an onrushing Peter Shilton before walking the ball into the net. Cameras weren't there, unfortunately, but it remains the best individual goal I had ever seen, and I seem to remember reading an interview in which Jimmy also remembered it as his best.
I first saw him play for Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Easter Monday 1960, when his goal, combined with a brilliant game by the young Peter Bonetti, saw Chelsea win 1-0, a result which, combined with a similar result on Easter Saturday at home to Man City (in which Denis Law and Bert Trautman filled the matchwinner roles) cost Spurs the title that season.
What always characterised Jimmy for me was his quick-wittedness, which showed in his famous ability to anticipate what was going to happen and arrive at the ball a split second before whoever had the thankless task of marking him.
RIP
