Things are moving quickly.
Me and my sister have had an offer on my Mam's house (which is where I'm staying right now). It's from an elderly couple who see it as potentially their dream home. It was arranged privately, my sis knows their son, so we don't need to involve an estate agent at all. They've already had a home-buyer's survey done, they'll pay us close to our asking price, so everybody's happy. And they're in no rush to move in - but of course that still means I have to find a place for myself.
I'm still looking at properties locally, but won't be hanging around, so possibly a buy-to-let arrangement would be best. I still want to have a place here, the feeling of having 'roots', a base, is extremely important to me.
Anyway once I've finished this short stint in Edinburgh I'll be back here in Whitehaven for a week or two, we'll have to clear the house of everything (a HUGE job) and then I'll have to find somewhere to work. I really don't know where. I've applied for everything going. As the main recruitment period for language school is early-to-mid-September, it's going to be all go in a few weeks, what with packing things, throwing things out, signing contracts, sorting out flights, and maybe even buying property. It might be an idea just to move my stuff out of this house into a rented place in Edinburgh or Glasgow while I work out what the fuck to do. I don't know.

I would suggest getting together with your sister to see if you can work through and take the stuff you want from the house and leave the rest of it to house clearance (or even negotiate with the buyers on this). Ideally you need time to get through it, but there is also an element of getting it over and done with asap.

Yeah, it would help if we got moving. I've been sitting around here for months and have hardly done a damned thing apart from taking plastic bags full of books down to the charity shops now and again.
When you say 'house clearance' - is that a service? people who just empty a property of everything?
I think the buyers might let me keep a couple of boxes here until I get my own place sorted.
Ah, it's all a bit stressful.

House Clearance is just that. They clear the house for you. You could negotiate with the buyers, so that they pay less but clear the house themselves.

I still want to have a place here, the feeling of having 'roots', a base, is extremely important to me. I had the same situation. My dad never threw out a piece of lumber or rebar, thinking he'd use it again. We told him to throw all that stuff out but gave up trying. A couple weeks after the funeral, my brother basically told me to get the hell out, which I didn't appreciate, but he wanted to get shit out of the house and fixed up before trying to sell it in March, the start of the selling season. After my divorce, I was basically living really lean - I was living out of a gym bag for nearly two years with my dad with a few work clothes hung up. I moved back across the Bay to be nearer the kids and took what furniture I needed for my apartment from my dad's house. 90% of my furnishings are his. My brother and I would take every weekend and throw shit out in a rented dumpster and I tried selling some stuff to antique stores. We finally called 1-800-JUNK and they cleared the place out before selling it. I've gone by the old place a few times since we sold it and even talked to the new owners. They have four young boys, and with the creek running through the property, it's a great place for them to play and explore. My brother has never been back and has no inclination to see it.

Yeah, my sister feels no great attachment to this place at all. It means a lot to me, and I'll be terribly sad to leave.
I really have no idea where to go. It's a strange feeling. I'd have been happy to be in this situation 30, 20, maybe even just 10 years ago - money in the bank, no ties. But it's all a bit much.
Part of me wants to buy a little farmhouse in the middle of a field and spend the rest of my days looking at the rain out the window, eating biscuits or writing shit here. But then the idea of getting a flat in a big city and immersing myself in a hectic life for a few years sort of appeals too. Whether than means that I don't know myself well, or just that - like most people - I'm a complicated fella, I don't know.

You don't strike me as being ready to retire to the country and stare out a window, John.
But then....city living in any decent city is not cheap either.
How long are you in Edinburgh for?

Until September 6th. Prison-cell student accommodation until the end of the month, then a hotel for the first week of Sept.

It's not that bad! but that's a nice thought.
I've got a nice (subsidised) apartment on the Royal Mile booked for that last week, so things will get better. And hopefully a week in Italy before I have to leave house and home for good.
