today i taught 'if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys', to a student who had cut corners getting work done on a plot of land he's bought.

An interesting one, at least to me, is one we use here in French: "On n'engraisse pas un cochon à l'eau claire". Literally, you don't fatten a pig with clear water. I guess the English "You don't fatten a pig by weighing it". Not exactly the same, but related.
In terms of the French one, the way I take it, is that nuance and variety are essential to productivity and enjoyment.

Frank (Sea of Tunes) shared a couple of unique Dutch idioms:
(when your intuition affirms something:) "I feel that through my pee."
(an expression of great surprise:) "This causes my trousers to drop spontaneously!"
