Yes, but...
...certainly not by any massive margin, AND...I suppose you've allowed me to see the similarities that I'd been overlooking for many a decade. While they aren't the SAME song, Bowie seems to be more or less using the same magic spells to summon the muse (descending chords, major/minor tension, going BIG for the chorus, etc.).

I love ATYD, but yeah, LOM is still better.

Some days I prefer one, some days the other. I guess LOM has got more of a flourish to it, it has that sweeping grandiosity that excites people.

I don't know. There's only one "Life on Mars?"—the studio version. It's a masterpiece and should sit in a museum. It isn't a living breathing song. Me and my friends can play "All the Young Dudes" all night long, any number of times, and it will always work and always make us happy. There is something to be said for that. "Paperback Writer" is rightfully the A-side and made people happy for a couple months, but "Rain" has provided thousands of garage bands with pleasure for decades. Same kind of thing.

This is more stirring, more personal. The chorus is simpler, more singalong (no wonder Oasis ripped off the four-chord fanfare for 'Stand By Me').

The chorus is simpler, more singalong Which doesn't always mean better.

It's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. Luckily it hasn't been nearly as overplayed, so I still love it. Just as I love "Strawberry Fields", "The Winner Takes It All", "Good Vibrations" and various other un-coverable masterworks of pop music. But something you can do yourself — or that lives in different versions from which you make your own imaginary perfect version in your mind — that's pretty special. I pretty much like every version I've heard of "All the Young Dudes".

Listening to them just now… I actually think I prefer ‘Dudes.’
Obviously they are both brilliant, stunning records. But there’s something about the way ‘Dudes’ reads as kind of tossed off that allows you to feel like it’s almost an impromptu performance. All of those vocal asides, just things Hunter was moved to say in the moment.
‘Mars’ announces itself as a kind of bathetic piano ballad and improves as it goes. ‘Dudes’ starts and finishes perfectly, and has no Anthony Newley about it. Now… I like Anthony Newley just fine. But I like Ian Hunter a lot more.

I just wish I knew what video I posted, it has three likes and I need that validation in my life.
But yeah, Life on Mars is in a completely different league, as is Bowie to Mott.
